New England salt allergy

Funny, here in Alaska we don't use salt. Lots of sand and plenty of plowing. When I lived in Mi., I thought salt was the only way to keep the snow off the road, that's not true, it is just the least expensive for DOT in that area. Here... we don't have a lot of salt at our disposal but we have a lot of sand. Even funnier to me, I grew up in Ca. and didn't know snowplows even existed back then.

Unfortunately we get a lot of ice here and the only way to fight it is with salt.(I guess) Combine that with people who can't drive, are yakking on their cellphones and just HAVE to be somewhere it's a necessary evil.

I have 2 inches of ice in my driveway still from the last storm that froze over. I put road salt in my lawn spreader and pushed it down the driveway. If you don't salt then the ice can sit until Spring. The are a lot of really bad drivers up here...especially in snow.

My 40 is in pieces in the garage for the winter....

Transmission fluid works well too for rustproofing frame rails.

I spent the week iin training in Elyria, OH and omygod I am so glad to be back home. It never broke freezing and snowed like a muther nearly every day. Back next week again so I'll have to truely savor the mid 70's we will be enjoying this weekend. Boy, I don't miss that crap.

Once again, stupid people have ruined it for the rest of us. The stupid people are plentiful in southern New England.

The best solution is to keep your classic cars off the road in winter. I put my CA 64 VW Westphalia camper up on blocks every winter when I was in New England (only 3 years). It was the only VW of that vintage on the road in summer because all of rest of them had rusted out long ago. I sold it for big bucks to an old hippie guy from Boston when I moved back to CA.

Indeed - my 40 had just settled down for a long winter's nap when that sodium dispenser rolled by...

Yep! We spray our road sanders with used oil and diesel. Kept one sander going for 13 years with straight salt. Bar oil would be better. The thicker the better!

X3, I hose my daily driver and tow rig down with the stuff every season, so far they're still looking good. The grease/wax undercoatings in addition to the oil makes a great combo, messy but it pretty much stops rust. My Cruisers are sadly living under covers out side, at least no salt exposure.

Shoot me for getting off track, but how do you like the Jetta TDI? I need a diesel. :crybaby:
