I once was lying on a sofa next to my beloved pet. Head to head watching the
news as we had for about 10 years. Anurism(sp) burst in his brain and with
one instant bite my ear was in 3 pieces and the side of my face looked like hamburger meat. He quicky lost vision and motor skills and had to be put down.
Funny thing is he would not look me in the face after that even when I would hold his head and look in his eyes to explain it was OK and I knew he meant no harm.
Several weeks later when his condition was very bad, I had him put down.
As the Vet gave him the shot he finally turned to look at me and licked my face.
He died moments later as I cried my eyes out.
So, even a trusted loyal companion with teeth can do a lot of damage especially
when they are about 100 lbs.
My dogs are smaller now.
Oh, and plastic surgery is wonderful. You wouldn't know it had happened
now. Still the same old ugly puss it was before the bite.

Police: Rottweiler Mauls Toddler In Spotsylvania
Boy Hospitalized, Dog Seized

SPOTSYLVANIA, Va. -- A 3-year-old boy is in critical condition after a rottweiler attack Tuesday afternoon in Spotsylvania, Va.

Police said it happened on Timberland Drive.

Sheriff Howard Smith said the boy's father noticed him missing and called authorities.

Deputies found the boy about 3:45 p.m. lying face down in his neighbor's back yard. Smith said he was suffering from bite marks to his face, neck, top of his head and lower body. And the sheriff said the boy's clothes were torn off.

The boy was flown to Inova Fairfax Hospital and the 2-year-old female rottweiler was seized by animal control.

No charges have been filed against the owner, but authorities said the investigation is continuing.

The attack comes less than a year after 82-year-old Dorothy Sullivan and her small dog were killed by three roaming pit bulls at her Spotsylvania County home.

The dogs' owner, Deanna Large, was convicted last month of manslaughter and the jury recommended she serve three years in prison.

....Anyhow...she came out the door to get the paper and out dashed a medium sized dog. I was going uphill and not pedaling very fast....That dog looked up saw me and did a bee line for me.....I could see the woman was just watching and waiting to see what would happen....She didn't have to wait long I reached down and grabbed my zefal pump, flipped out the thumb lever and raised it over my head.....Miss bathrobe started screaming the dogs name.....He stopped about ten feet from me and went wagging back to the house as I rode on.....I was totally ready to go medievil on that dog.....I sometimes think the calm & crazed "bring it" look I had on was also a factor.

Similar thing happened to me, but the owner wasn't around. Dog charged me . . . went right between my wheels. It was a chihuahua. I was sorry I didn't run it over. . . . .

I did hit a German Shepard with a 5-iron while going to get the mail when I was a kid--he stopped challenging me after that.

What is a zefal pump?

Bike pump. But instead of air molecules, it filters it down the zefals, which weigh less than air molecules, so you have less inertia to deal with in spinning the tires.

my old school frame pump for the road bike was similar to the black one in this picture the lower left end of the barrel has a thumb lock that sticks out like a point and was great for fending off fido.

I was able to access more information today, I must make a correction. It wasn't a golden, it was a lab.

Dog was well trained, on his owner's property, and the nine year old girl was "trespassing".....(when I was a kid we played all over)

Lab had caught a mouse, girl was trying to get it out to "save it".

So I don't know where blame lies. If I had a dog that was trained to stay in my front yard.......kids will be kids........and now she's scarred for life, and went through 3 surgeries.

Now the owners will never be able to own another dog and have HO ins., or at least will have to sign away any liability from future carriers.

Take a look at your liability coverage. Both home and auto. If your assets, or even your assets plus next 10 years of salary exceed those limits, proceed with extreme caution or rethink your strategy.

Don't get me wrong CJ, I love dogs. Rotts and Labs mostly.

The intent of my thread was not to bash Labs.

That being said, I don't know what my intent was. The owners had a well trained dog. On their property. Girl was out-ofbounds, just being a kid. She shouldn't have messed with it. People will have to live with it forever.

Pits can do damage, others can too. Pits have it bred into them as Doug stated.

I'm just bummed.

like my dad came across, a guy shooting his dog at the local garbage dump. he wasn't trying to kill it outright. he was tortoring it with bullet after bullet.
dad pulled the rifle from behind the seat in the old dodge and one shot through the head and the dog was finally put to peace.
the owner was pissed at dad but didn't have the guts to take on my old man.
i see red everytime i think of that story...

You're in denial, Eric. I don't buy it and there's an exception to EVERY rule in life. Pits, Rotties and the like have a MASSIVE track record for being overly aggressive dogs. I seriously doubt a Golden did this without the existence of extenuating circumstances we don't know about. Ive never seen a rap video with a homie walking a Golden or Lab down the street in the hood if that's proof enuff. This said, humans are 99.9% responsible for much of the negative dog behaviour we hear about and experience and that's a shame. And it's always the folks who should LEAST have such a dog - who have such a dog - fueled by owner insecurity issues.

Somethings not right here. How does a well trained Lab - a breed solidly recognized worldwide for their gentle dispositions and family-friendly instincts, attack a girl cuz she tried to get the mouse the dog was playing with? Doesn't make sense at all. At most, the Lab may robustly and vigorously play and accidents can happen. I've had Labs, I have a Lab now and have been around Labs all my life and although very strong and athletic, I trust these dogs with toddlers albeit that wagging otter tail can take out an entire dining room table!

Just a thread to show anything can happen.

Doug's original post said it best and in fewer words.

The girl was messing with a dog and trying to get something from it's mouth on it's home turf.

The difference is, the lab probably just barked or snapped once. Another breed, a different owner, and the girl could have been killed. The lab did not go and go and go again. One snap. No visciousness.

Just a warning what can happen even outside of the machismo pit owning redneck crowd.

Not a hater of pits again, I have known some good ones.

Kids need to be taught limits.
