I was reading a thread somewhere where people were bagging on the Bronco w/ 4-cylinder because - how much power would it actually have prior to the turbo spooling up? And for this reason people are already writing it off.

Then I remembered: 22RE, 3RZ-FE, 2TR-FE are all 4-cylinder gas engines and actually do quite well offroad. Gearing, gearing, gearing - another nod to Ford for (presumably) getting this one right.

When you have a 95:1 crawl ratio, you can spool the turbo no problem while still crawling.

310 ft lbs of torque and 95:1, I think these internet wheelers will be ok. 🤣🤣

i would crawl. it took them long enough to get there head out of the sand.

Hard to disagree with the above sentiment, pretty accurate IMO. Funny though, it reminds me of the early days, 03-04ish, when the FJ Cruiser trail teams were traveling with prototypes and hitting major NA ORV spots while building hype and then when it finally hit the cover of Toyota Trails, the blowback was simultaneously bigly and hilarious. I recall people being so angry they asked TLCA to cancel their membership immediately. 😆

Back on thread topic, I got my preorder / reservation submitted and confirmed yesterday so we'll see how things go.

If we are being purists here - - I think there would be an argument that the FJ Cruiser is less of a departure from a FJ40 than the actual Land Cruiser of the same age. Flame away!

Because it has round headlights? Lol.

The fjc is a 4runner/Hilux with a different body. Light duty everything. Strong compared to a stock base model Jeep? Yes, but not HD like a cruiser.

The 100 and 200 are comfort models in this country, obviously, but they still have the super long service life design and heavy duty construction that all cruisers have had since day one. Ever seen an uparmored fjc? Negative, but uparmored 200s exist in lots of places.

if you want to go to the full lineup, comparing the fjc to a 7x series truck is like comparing a Prius to a Mack truck. It's a different ball game.

Not knocking the fjc, they're great, same with four runners, but they're no cruiser. They're similar maybe to a land cruiser Prado, but the Prado is intentionally the light duty and cheaper version of the cruiser.

Agree - - but I have never seen an up-armored FJ40, either.

FJ40s went over things, not through them, just like the original Jeep and like the FJCruiser.

I think the Prius vs Mack truck is quite an overstatement, to be fair :) Just because something is lighter, doesn't mean it is automatically "worse."

Like the FJ40:
  • Utilitarian vs comfort/luxury
  • Shorter wheel base
  • Two doors
  • Six cylinder (hehe)
  • More capable stock off-road (arguable)
  • Yes - an attempt at similar looks (sigh)
  • Also built in Japan with high standards of construction
  • Manual transmission option
Agree to with power train being inferior and the 100 is more in line with the Land Cruiser brand.

I also would much rather own a 100 or a 200 vs a FJ Cruiser, but for all the reasons that I also wouldn't want a FJ40 for my "family car."

My 2 cents..........

I've not looked hard at the new Bronco, I am not in the market for a new 4WD and I figure that I will look at them when they are actually out there in the world and I can spend a little time crawling around one.

What I also am not doing is comparing it to anything else, including it's own heritage. When I do look at one I will asses it on it's own merit and my own personal experience and what I want and need in a vehicle. This is exactly how I came to choosing to build a 1985 Mercedes 380 SL Pro Touring car. I did not want to build another 67 Camaro or Tri Five etc. Because rather than being judged solely on it's own merit, it would inevitably be compared to the other examples currently on the market and done in the past.

With regard to the Bronco, at first glance it appears to have addressed many of the issues folks find with the Jeeps and, yes, the current Land Cruisers. personally, I hope that it is a hit. I do not think it will take away from the market I work in, I believe it will open interest across the board.

I hope it’s a hit also. Hey if it becomes as popular as 4 door jeeps are right now that would be great. Maybe other auto makers will join the market and create their own version of a removal top capable 4 wheel drive.

This! Plus I love seeing a domestic shine like Ford has been recently. I was a GM guy through and through (with an obvious soft spot for Toyota 4WDs), but after experiencing my brother's EcoBoost F150 pull a heavy camper, the interior space and comfort, etc etc, I started to take notice. I LOVED my Duramax, but it really feels like GM is resting on their laurels the last decade or so. JMO, I'm sure others have a very different opinion.

Hopefully, rumors are true and Toyota will bring a more utilitarian LC to our market. I think it would sell if the price was right. Just the other night I went and saw a Heritage 200 at Toyota of Apex - 90k+ and it's been on the lot for months.

we were just there on saturday looking at it and my girlfriend about s*** bricks when i told her the price. sure is purdy though!

One thing is that i am
Tired of breaking crap, cars not starting and things not
Working. If toyota comes up
With something solid i will redistribute my relic wealth. 🥴

That's easy Raf. Just put in an LS3 Connect & Cruise, do a full body off and rebuild every component, paint and interior.

If you do not do it all at once you'll constantly be working on something. The story of old vehicles. Also why God invented triple A :)
