Same. Only difference is after I hide them from my wife I hide them from myself to remain ignorant and focus on how cool it is to own a diesel Toyota.
For the first time ever, I kept up with every penny I spent on my 77 Series (purchase price, transportation, taxes, parts,
labor and accessories) and although the total is a closely held secret, it suffices to say it's more money than I could hope to recoup if and when I sell my Cruiser. It's probably the first time I've "outspent" the current value of the vehicle.

I've mostly done that with my 74, over 10 years. Adding it all up is NOT recommended.
Then I look at the price of a new Tacoma and I feel pretty good again :D

@cruiseroutfit can comment, but he has been in several meetings with high level TMS personnel and even Sadayoshi Koyari (Land Cruiser lead at TMC in Japan). The topic of 70's in the USA always comes up, and the response can be summarized as "it's not happening, ever".

That sums it up nicely :D

There were some ongoing discussions about what would have to happen to basically force Toyota to bring a 7x here but yeah, it's not happening.

It would be easy to make that 3 a 6.......:hmm:

2018 is the 60th anniversary of the Land Cruiser in the US. No time like the present to build one VDJ76 and one VDJ79 per dealer, toss some cool fender badges on them and let the bidding begin.......:grinpimp:

As former military, I certainly understand having a plan for everything. But how in the world could Toyota ever be "forced" into a decision like that? After all, it is a business. A "soft force", I guess? Maybe a new regulation that somehow kills the 150 series import? That's about all I can think of. But for planning exercises, I suppose you don't get paid for the "why", just the "how". I like my 80/79/40 mashup idea better anyhow...

Not even the Japanese have the same level of access to NEW 70 series as some other countries do, correct?

The 70 was re-introduced to the Japanese market for the 2015 model year (only) to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the platform.

And none of them were diesels, right?

Stoney, we wouldnt shell out the money either ifn we could get JDM's!

I'd pay 10 grand more than the 30,000 asking price for a TJ Rubicon Unlimited. That's 40 grand. Dont tell me Toyota couldnt sell one here for that.

TB

HDJ-74's away.
A brand new Troopy is about $60k in USD...the GX is a little cheaper.

A nice first step would be if Toyota offered diesel engines in vehicles they currently sell.

Every country is different when it comes to taxes of importing vehicles made somewhere else. I am no expert on what it costs to import a 70 series made in Japan into the US (if it was legal) but I would assume that it could really add on to the total price to the buyer.

Maybe that is why the 200 series is so damn expensive in comparison to what the 200 series cost in other countries?

@roscoFJ73 .... since you dipped your toes into the political pool, here are the facts.
The United States is a world leader in protecting the environment and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. From 2005 to 2018, total U.S. energy-related CO2 emissions fell by 12%.

In contrast, global energy-related emissions increased nearly 24% from 2005 to 2018.

And so they should, because the US built its wealth on pollution and its not the only one. Environmental legislation has been hacked to death by Trump and his lobbyists. Who thunk the US would allow a coalmine to operate right up to the rivers edge, when previously it had to 100 ft? Not to mention mining in National Parks etc.

Australia isn't helping much either. Think about the greed and lobbying related to the Carmichael coal mine project and the Indian company Adani.

All that coal....not a good thing.

Just to throw a little gravel in the gears, I think a useful parallel can be drawn to the Indian Roxor. They are selling them in the US as some kind of farm-use, off-road only fun vehicle. Kind of useless IMHO, but they are selling it. Toyota could do the same with the 70, but what would be the point?

I'd suggest that we should be glad for the 25 year old exception in the regulations that allow us to bring in old 70 series. And I disagree with several posts above that suggest one cannot bring an old 70 series back to something approaching newish condition.

Of course, I am biased. I love the old 70's.

Personally I don’t think we should be content or happy with idiotic laws.

If you know the history of the 25yr law, it’s anything but fair and just. It’s all about money.

There was a time you could import whatever you wanted. I used to own a 1983 Nissan Patrol that came in 1987.

Cheers
