Just pondering a build thought...:hhmm:

the newer style tacomas have six speeds in them right? Might be an interesting swap behind an old diesel. Wonder if it would just be a lot of shifting or if the ratios would work?

Doubt it's direct bolt up, and possible many other factors- thoughts?

If you want an Isuzu, talk to Randy at Isuzudieselswapper.com He's got enough adapters out there already that one of the exisitng patterns might be close.

I looked into it but found a pretty spotty warranty and repair history with many throwout bearing issues and some other internal problems.

One guy did put one in behind a 1FZ - Bjowett is his screen name I think.

if you can put it behind an FZ, you should be able to put it behind a factory Toyota diesel.

Depending on the ratios, I would love to run a 6spd on my truck.
But only if 1st is lower than my present first, and 6th is more overdrive. Otherwise it just wouldn't be worth the effort just to gain a little tighter 1st-2nd-3rd

I just found some info on one of the toyota 6 speeds
seems like it wouldn't work at all with my hd-t motor.... unless I were to jump up the diff gears by large margin (maybe 4.88?)

Transmission: A760E six-speed auto

* 1st 3.52:1
* 2nd 2.04:1
* 3rd 1.40:1
* 4th 1.00:1
* 5th 0.72:1
* 6th 0.59:1
* Rev. 3.22:1

oops. I just noticed that it is an auto, not a manual. in that case, I suppose that maybe it could work ok. but I'd never add an auto to my truck by choice.

If it would allow you to re-gear for better crawl ratios yet allow the additional 6th ratio to provide a highway gear, might be worth looking into. Not sure it would work in the troopy, I don't feel there is room for the fifth gear I want to add, my knee is in the way, could probably bend the shifter though.

I know that a six speed vs. 5 was nice in the street cars I drove.

if only they made an h66f!
ah drop the rpms for an sweet overdrive.
Fuel economy on the highway would be unreal cruising at 100km/h

my biggest gripe with the h151 is the distance between 2nd and 3rd. I agree.
but I still wouldn't want to deal with changing the tranny out unless I got "all of the above"
I want a granny first that I never use on the street. Make it 6:1
then I want 2nd to be a tad lower than it is now make it 3:1
and 3rd to be lower as well, bring it in near 2:1, maybe 2.3:1
then 4th could be about what 3rd is now around 1.5:1
5th could be 1:1
and 6th could be a fairly deep overdrive-- maybe .7:1 or something

I'm just spitballing here. But that seems like it would work great for driving around town, yet offer a meaningful first gear for hauling/towing/mild offroad/crawling in low, and also offer a better freeway rpm range.

but I guess that's just wishful thinking. for now I'll just enjoy what I have and buy some taller tires. :)

6th .6:1 it's nice nice ... but just dreams .. coz even with 4.88 you won't catch up the 1st 3.52:1 .. and I like first over 4.5:1 ..

I am sure I read about a Tacoma 6speed tranny being fitted in an 80 by someone on mud, cant remember username though

Very Interested!

Does anyone know the ratios to my stock troopy 4 SPD? Myfirst is granyyand perfect for trail ratio in 4h. I would not want to lose that and sound like if possible behind 2h it may make it much more drivable, as long as I keep thegranny 1st.

New 6 speed ratios from Tacoma US spec

Gear / Ratio /
I / 4.17 /
II / 2.19 /
III / 1.49 /
IV / 1.19 /
V / 1.00 /
VI / 0.85 /

I have an 84 AU spec 4 spd with granny low... Is my first ratio 3.? Or 4.9 like I have read? With stock gear unknown ratio, and 33" tires the granny gear is almost only used on incline starts.

yeah, looks like they just stuck a step between 3 and 4. I never once thought the difference between the two was that great. It would be cooler if it was geared more like the ZFS6-650 where it had a stupid low first, then a normal first, second, third, fourth. I also like the ZFS6 layout:

1, 1,3,5
l l l l
N
l l l
R 2 4

1(underdrive 1) and R are an non-syncro, so you can't casually shift into them in motion, and share the same shift rail so the other 5 speeds are simply a very road-worthy transmission.

Why not set up a overdrive box off your t-case instead of going with a 6 speed? This would give you the same low granny gear for crawling, but would raise it for high way. One of my dad's fiends had it done in an FJ60 back in the day. Put 65 mph down to 2500 rpm. Not sure of the ratio since I was just a little guy at the time... Just a thought.

What about ordering a Richmond 6spd with the gearing wanted and use a universal blow proof scatter shield bell housing? Just need to mount it up to the t case...

But othewise it sounds like a lot of work considering i love the 4 spd, but am always reaching for fifth... Ha
