I have a 88 fj62 with 205k. I can't make my back up lights to work when go in reverse but can see that it momentarily switches on. Just before i get it into park position the back-up lights go on and goes off when in park. I changed the rubber bushing to clean up the sloppiness from the side to side play on the transmission lever(old ones worn out) but did not cure the problem. I was wondering where the neutral safty switch is and how do I adjust it? thanks alot for your input and advice.

The switch is on the passengers side of the tranny. There is an adjustment procedure in your FSM, which you have, right? If the adjustment doesn't work, my feeble memory seems to recall that someone over on the 3FE list took their switch apart to clean it, but I'm not sure. Might want to ask over there...

Good luck,
Mitch

Thanks for the reply. I also found out the adjustment with Gumby's help at his shop via his manual . I took the two adjustment screws on the switch( located on the passenbger side tranny) and loosened it so that I can twist the switch towards the bottom rear( it pivots ). I did not open the switch up,but just retightened the bolts. The amount of movement was so small that it is hardly noticable. The maximum amount of movement for the adjustment screws might be about 1/8 of an inch at both extremes. If your looking for neutral safety switch, the shape is like 1/4 of a piece of pie. I notice it is the same shape and size as on 80 series.

I guess I coulda mentioned what it looked like, huh? :o)
Did this fix your problem?

Mitch

the problem is fixed! Now I can see the expression on people's faces as I am about to back into them at night.
