Hi All,

A friend of mine is considering a 95 80. He found it on a used car lot. The salesman claims the radiator is leaking and the headgasket needs replacing. It has 150K on it.

Should he even pursue it or pass on it. The body is in good shape. It's red.

Thanks,

Not enough information. I need more.

Although I will say this....I would be more likely to buy it if it was from the owner rather than the dealer. Dealers have a way of hiding flaws and most of them know what the flaws are but won't tell you. At most dealerships, I would say you get what you pay for.

$4500 seems high, especially if they KNOW it needs a head-gasket.

On Ebay there was a '95 with 232K miles, claimed it ran fine, drove fine, was in a accident so front bumper beatup some and a few dents on fender, oh and the a/c didn't work, also no lockers, it had a buy-it-now for $3900 and it didn't sell (it had been on ebay atleast once before that, maybe twice, technically sold the first time, but seller said the buyer bailed).

Does this one have lockers? Assuming no lockers, and knowing it needs fairly major work (paying someone to do a HG is not cheap)...maybe $3K, but still depends on if your friend wants to deal with fixing it, if he doesn't want to deal with fixing it, then no matter how cheap it is, it's not a 'good' deal because he doesn't want that hassle. Also, how's the rust on the '95? Body usually always looks fine, but look underneath to see rusty parts.

Good Luck...

Personally, I'd pass on it.

If you were able and willing to do all of the work yourself and the rest of the vehicle is in excellent shape then maybe.

But... if you had to have someone else do the work it is going to get quite expensive, may need to resurface the head also.

In addition to that.....it would be a good idea to go through all of the service recommendations that most of us do when purchasing a used cruiser that has an unknown service history.

I'd put a little more money toward a better one.

Just my .02

Okay. Thanks all!

I'll tell him to pass on it and to keep looking.

TT

But considering a 1fz-fe's head gasket will go, maybe this would be a time for his friend to get a cruiser and then not have to ever worry about the head gasket after he gets it fixed.

Offer the guy 3000 and see what happens, givin that the HG and radiator is toast. I would look it over for body damage, interior stuff. Make sure the frame is not bad. work on the stuff and fixit up and wheel the crap out of it. later robbie

At risk of stating the obvious, run the VIN through CARFAX if you haven't already.

If you have, is the title clean?
