Hi guys, I'm new to the world of off road, and my LX470 is my first attempt to get into it. I come from the world of sports cars, but am starting to realize not a lot of that knowledge is going to swap over.
My LX470 didn't come with a key fob, just got a normal key when I got it. That's how I have been driving it so far but I think I'd like to get a key fob for it. Now, in the past I've just ordered a key fob off of ebay and programmed it. However, I'm not sure how it works with these cars. I did a search and everyone seems to be going to the dealer and paying hundreds of dollars.
Has anyone just bought a new or used key fob online and programmed it for their Land Cruiser or LX?

Go buy a new key from eBay or amazon. They’ve got blanks that they will cut for you if you provide your key code (your dealer can tell you your key code if you don’t know it. You’ll just need to verify ownership). Then pick up a titanium shell from @suprarx7nut — because otherwise your fancy expensive new key is going to break off in your ignition one day, ruining your life. All in, it’s still way cheaper than a new key cut by the dealer.

Edit: The keys come with programming instructions for the fob, or there are tutorials on YouTube.

Welcome to Mud.
I would suggest you try the search function before posting a topic. This has been covered many many times. Maybe try a search in this section for "key programming". Threads discuss the master key v other keys and what needs to happen for reprogramming and or replacement as well as suggested sources for new keys, fobs and shells. There are issues with having to deal with your ECU if you need a new master.
The site is a wealth of information and many problems with all kinds of things have been discussed here, sometimes to death.

Also check out the FAQ or Frequently Asked Questions thread at the top.

I ordered a pair of switchblade keys off ebay. The seller programmed and cut my key. All I had to do was provide the seller with my key code (which I obtained from the parts department at Lexus) and some high def pictures of the front and back of my original key. Once I got the keys I just swapped out the buttons over to the new key.

Here is the link to the seller's page.

YotaMD guy here making the "Buy it for Life" titanium key shell.

I second the recommendation to buy a cheap key remote, then buy the YotaMD kit. The cheap plastic keys break often. Very often. The remotes inside those cheap plastic keys, however, seem to work well.

You can also buy a used remote on ebay and then pickup the YotaMD shell. The remotes tend to last forever, it's just the housing that's a complete gamble.

What sort of sports cars do you come from? You'll find a lot of folks here with a sports car as well. Lots of basics carry-over, knowledge-wise, but there are certainly a LOT of differences in the communities.
