I know I know, another boring tire thread. Sorry.

I'm needing to replace my tires on our 80 series and I'm trying to do it before a trip to Moab this weekend and I'm considering trying something different.

I've been running some Goodyear MT/R's for a couple years on it and they've been good. I love them on the trail, but my truck gets driven by my wife and spends a good portion of the time on the road. The MT/R are great on the road too as long as they're balanced and rotated regularly. Ours were not done as regularly as possible and are really noisy now from cupping.

Anyway, what's everyone running these days? I don't mind getting another set of MT/R's but what else is working well for people? I've actually considered the Mickey Thompson Baja Claw radial. That's what I've had for my spare and I know its not gonna be the best road tire, but its a little cheaper than an MT/R
Also considering BFG's in the MT or AT flavor.

So, any help? Do I just stick with what I've got? THanks

The tyre that I am thinking of getting is the Michey Thompson Baja Radial Claw. It is a directional Tyre (Tire) with large voids between its V shaped tread, very like the Low ground pressure agricultural tyres that I have on my Alpine Tractor. I have only a hunch on how they should behave in mud but I think they should behave better than the X terrain in this respect because it has a similar tread but less void and more blocks. The X terrain is probably better suited to Rock It should be very quiet on the road for a mud tyre because of the progressive way that the tread meets the road. It may well loose out on directional stability on side slopes that are greasy and it may not have a lot of cutting power. For cutting through the mire Simex Extreme Centipede are the way to go and may excel in mud and clay but may not be as good on the road. Tyres are a compromise they may perform in one terrain better than an other but loose out here and there. You have to look at what you really need your tyres to do. I have no experience of either tyre but have asked around on various forums and used my deductive reasoning and imagination. The only other directional V treaded tyre is the Yokahoma Geolander Mud Terrain but I can not fin any thing about it or its performance. Let us know how you get on I would b interested in you comments if you do get the Baja Radial Claw. :)

Firestone destinations.

with the time frame I'm trying to get these (next couple days) the MTR's are out. They're on national backorder.

Don't think I can get the baja claws in time. I can get the BFG's and right now I'm leaning toward the ATs because of cost. Not the best rock tire, but for how the truck gets used it should be fine. Still looking but that's where I'm headed.

REVOS!!!

Actually go to tire rack's warehouse, and evaluate your needs according the the guide they have.

You need to weigh your actual needs to make an informed decision. The Revo's fit my parameters to a "T"

I thought Cost co was running the $75 or $100 back on REvos (bstones) now?

I'll second the Revo's. Very nice on road behavior and probably agressive enough tread for you.

Adam, check out Nitto Terragrapler AT's. Good value for money, not as aggresive as MT/R's and runs good on the road.

Has anyone tried the Nitto Mud Grapplers? 21/32" tread depth and some pretty good sizes.

This doesn't cover the "why" and "how much I love them" necessarily, but this thread covers what people currently have on their 80s.

The last time I tallied the numbers, the BFG ATs were clearly in the lead, but there have been a few Revo owners chiming in since then, so they might be gaining some ground...

for many reasons I would NOT get the Mickey Thompson Baja Claw Radial. If you want directional get the X-terrain. Both will lack latteral grip somewhat but by far the larger lugs on the x-terrain keep it stable, quite and bottom line, mud is mud and a tire is only going to get you so far before you sink your 6k lb tank to the frame. And 4wheel crap parts always has them for a buy 3 get one free, yes they go full price but it comes out cheaper than anyone else and they usally have them in stock. Don't think they are on sale so you probably won't have them for the weekend. If you wanted an all terrain tire, get the GY AT/s in a 305 or go all out and get the Nitto Mud's and tell us about them, they probably are going to be my next set of rubbers.
