I want a half dozen or so medium duty tent stakes as what I have now is a mixture of lame freebies that came with various tents over the years. I just looked at Amazon and mostly saw short (like 8”) stakes. I’m thinking I want some rugged plastic ones maybe 12” to 14” made of a durable plastic?

Any suggestions? Amazon had a lot of aluminum angle ones - are those the way to go now? My soil can be somewhat rocky so was thinking ABS or other plastic more durable?

I second the military surplus stakes. My dad got a bunch from the army and we have been using them for years on our canvas tents. These are the ones I have and they even work well in sand.

I hate to pile on but I don't like plastic either.
As I (or more likely my son) loses my tent stakes I'm replacing them with slender aluminum or titanium stakes that are $1-2 each.

I use those surplus military stakes for my heavy canvas tent but would not want them in my 2 or 3 man tent bags.

btw - I dig the flogging molly reference.

I’ve been using 8” steel spikes for years... $.58/ea at Lowe’s. Never bent one, never had to replace one, easy to drive regardless of ground. Can be hard to pull out of hard rocky ground. But, not with a 16” straight-claw hammer. Can be bought in other lengths.

But, I don’t carry them in a backpack.

I got some solid steel ones from Snow Peak. They were kind of spendy but damn they work well. I’ve beat them into rocky soil with a sledge and never bent one. They’ll split small rocks.

Yeahhhh, those Snow Peak’s are nice. And a great, informative website that really explains the product well. Are they available from anywhere else?

I recently got some of those snow peak stakes from a place called Backcountry Gear:

Their price was pretty good and they shipped quickly.

I use them with my Foxwing awning and they rock. I also have a wack of the military surplus stakes and they are really good as well. All depends on what the ground is like.

I use a 14" lag bolt with a fender washer on top. I have a few I use with a few links of chain for my guy lines. I survived 70+ mph winds during a West Texas storm in March. I bring an impact driver and drive them into hard ground. I also have the MSR groundhog stake for the tent corners.

damn you guys are using some hefty stakes!
I'm using something similar to this Amazon.com : All one tech Pack of 12, 7075 Aluminum Outdoors Tent Stakes Pegs : Gateway
aluminum. Walmart carries them too. they work better than those cheap ones that tents come with.
Don't get the MSR ones which are quite costly.

Those say 7" long. Seems short, but I've never bought aftermarket stakes before so idunno. You think 7" is long enough? most the time I'm going into fairly compacted dirt with some rocks

I've had a set of these for decades. Meant primarily for use in snow, they're great in sand as well. Most decent sporting goods stores sell those giant nails with the plastic hooks on them for the tent straps for pretty cheap. I'm going to look at those surplus ones as well.

Forget plastic for rocky/hard pan soil. Been using the SnowPeak stakes for a few years and IMO they're worth the money especially for anchoring the Kodiak tent in hard and/or rocky soil. Every once in a while I can't get one out of the ground when pulling up camp. But a loop of good rope through each stake's eyelet...and the convincing power of my Hi-Lift, pulls 'em right up and out.

For those that carry an electric impact driver: Ground Screw Anchors for Tents, Canopies, Sports Equipment

You could always buy a length of #4 rebar and cut it and bend it to your liking. I use big fat long plastic stakes for sand and small whimy alum stakes (2) for backpacking. All my s*** is free standing. The stakes are for guy lines in the wind and rain

I'll chime in on Snow Peak as damn good as well! Spendy, yes, but worth it for the quality. I've pounded these things into very rocky terrain w/o damage.
