I found my exact problem and am reposting the conversation to see if FJ40Jim is correct...I hope so

I got my fuel pump off and cleaned the area up. Got my new kyosan pump from JT off road and went to put it on. The directions told me to make sure that I put the spacer back in between the block and the pump or else it could destroy my pump and or my crank. The problem is that my old pump did not have a spacer when I took it off. Only a little gasket material and an old gasket. Do I need to make sure that I get a spacer before I try to crank it up. I already replaced the pump on the engine but have not tried to start it or anything. I was waiting to hear back from some of you all before I did something stupid. Please help me out with this issue. Thanks, RG

if you dont use the spacer it will break the arm off good luck

FJ40 Jim
The spacer is used with the 1979-newer pumps. The 79-newer pumps are distinguished by having 3 push on hose connections, and ar crimped together (non-rebuildable). The 1978-earlier pump does not mount with a spacer, unless it is going onto a much later engine block.
Well, anybody got anything different? Also here is a pic of my two fuel pumps side by side...the New Kyosan has a bit longer arm on it...and I hope that won't be a problem. The one I took off was a Nikki...?
Thanks, Luke

So, Does your new pump have 2 or 3 connections?

It has two bolt holes...and the one arm...does that answer the question. And does every body see the pics now?

Yeah, thats just it, I didn't have the spacer the two fuel pumps are nearly identical except for the slightly longer arm on the newer one.....

Thanks all, I was just being precautious. What would have been a 15 min job took me a few hours of research...but was well worth not damaging the new pump. It went together fine, fired right up and even runs better...obviously...but I mean, maybe my Carb is not so bad after all, it was just starving a bit from the old leaky pump. Now I won't have to miss my Cruiser Friday commute ;)

As far as I know, the fully cast alloy pump (with 1 x inlet and 1 x outlet) does not require the spacer,
My 2F has that fuel pump and there is no spacer
The other fuel pump with the pressed steel top ( 1 x inlet, 1 x outlet + 1 x tank return) this pump does require a spacer.
I have seen this on Teebag's 2F fuel pump.
