I have a FJ 40 that all the metal work has been done so how much is the going price for some minor body work, primer and nice paint job ? THANKS Griz:hhmm:

I paid 2k for paint, did not include the engine bay or break down and reassembly.

I've had my rig at the shop for the last two months waiting on paint and body work. $2000 is what I was quoted on the paint along with $40hr. for body work. Both sides of my 40 had to be wiped, sanded, primed, and sealed. I stripped everything before it was delivered with a base coat of epoxy primer. Without doors and top, I should have around $5K. Some may think this is high but its worth it to me every time the light shines on it.

I know a guy in my area now that i would trust with any car and he will do a show job for no more 3k here. There are not to many painters you'll find that you can trust like him, hes already done insurance work on my moms car and it turned out great.he loves what he does and loves to show you around the shop and talk with you. Hes 40 bucks an hour for body and 90 for mechanical. They do it all including all the insurance work for the dealerships out here. He took me in the back once and showed me how they were in the process of taking a fullsize f350 off of its frame and transfering it to a brand new frame, it was way cool. They litterally disasemble almost everything to transfer it over. haha and i thought an fj40 frame off was time consuming. It was interesting to see how they do that for insurance work when the frame is damaged beyond repair, but new enough that fixing it didn't outweigh the cost of a new truck.

i have a link somewhere that shows the cheapest labor rate per state for body shops and what they charge for labor versus mechanical.

Is this a showcar, restoration to be dispalyed or a nice trail rig?

The purchase of a HVLP gun and a paint kit will treat you ok.
eBay Motors: Candy Apple Red Acrylic Enamel Auto Paint Kit (item 320179400671 end time Nov-30-08 04:26:50 PST)=

Inexperienced? Stay with a solid color.

A huge tip. Check for night courses in Auto body and paint, I Cleaned up and painted an old pickup for around $250 including the price of the course. Their discounts, tools, and paint booth came in as handy as the education and instructor's experience.

I did my own... primer, prep tools, paint cost me ~$250 (well close to $400 because I could not decide on the color). I got my spray guns from Harbor Freight $14.00 each. It turned really good but I spent more time covering/masking the cruiser than my garage. Now my garage is a nice tint of blue but it does look good with the white ceiling.:p

I think next year I'll go with the Olive Brown like fj40er's (I like to paint ;) ) (beautiful)
