Hello Mudders,

First off, thank you for such an informative site and knowledgeable individuals.

As many others, i have been lurking for a long time here. My dream car has been a LC for years and finally have the go-ahead from the financial advisory.

I'm looking at a 2004 LX 470 with 153K miles.

Its in Indiana and im in Florida.

The dealer has sent me pics of the vehivle and it has rust underneath.

Would you walk away? I did check the VIN on the lexus site and its been maintained at the dealer all its life. It also states the 95k service has been performed on the dealer site.

I dont have enough posts to share my gdrive. How much is too much? Is there any other way for me to post pics other than waiting the two days?

Thanks for your time!

Carlos

How much rust? A little surface rust underneath is not a big deal, imo.

If you live in FL, I'd be looking at several states in SE and South before IN. My truck grew up in GA which has been an excellent decision long term!

I would walk away for sure if there are rust on it. Bought one of my 80 from PA, and it was such a pain to work on and the cancer does not stop either. I swear I will never get one from the northern state anymore, I will take my time and find one down south.

Is that too much? Otherwise the vehicle looks great, and service history is perfect at same lexus dealer.

The rust just ate through the front skid plate. It is not that bad, but is a challenge to fix them though, as you may find lots of bolts seize and snap down the road and replacing parts more frequent than no rust truck.

Yah, that's worse than a little surface rust - you have some minor cancer there on the plate. No telling what's hidden. A little rust surface rust here and there isn't a big deal, but ANY cancer means I'd walk if I couldn't spend some time really giving it the once over in person.

If you are going to turn wrenches on it I would keep looking, speaking from experience. If you are going to pay others to work on it, maybe not so bad if it is a great deal.

I did notice some rust on a couple bolts and i was unsure about that amount of rust. And how bad it actually looks. I think i was drawn to it due to the service history. But ill keep looking for the next best thing...

Thanks for the advice!

Yeah, I try to DIY as much as i can. Would 16k for a 2k4 with excellent service history and 154k miles be enough to look the other way? Thats my conflict.

I have been looking at that same truck. I am in Kansas and trying to convince myself to drive to Indy to look at her. The price is def right on it- the rust is concerning.

Yeah, its got great maintenance history. What does 90 mile service mean? Is that the Timing belt/water pump also? I did not see the sticker on the engine pics. Ill ask for pics from the removed skid plates.

Yes, the 90k service includes the timing belt / water pump.

Yes, the 90k service includes the timing belt / water pump.

90k service includes t-belt. Water pump, seals, tensioners, pulleys are all add-ons that can be performed with T-belt R&R (for additional labor typically). You'd have to see if the parts are on the repair invoice or if there is a specific line item for water pump in order to determine if it's been done.

That rust is nothing - I'd be all over that.

So i text-ed the salesman and asked if i could get a look at whats behind the skid plates and the manager told him no. Do you feel that could be cleaned with a wire brush or possibly a needle gun [scaler]? Wonder how much a shop would charge for a pro removal? $500 - $1000?

Thanks for chiming in.

^I agree - that rust is nothing. Now the hole in the skid plate is not from rust, wonder what he hit to do that?

It seems like s good deal. Like I said I want to make the drive to Indy to look at her. But it's 8 hrs from me. I just can't seem to find anything worth buying close to me.
