need info on a 1962 fj45 lwb flat bed (2 Viewers)

would you have any info on a 1962 fj 45 landcruiser 3 speed column shift.it's painted with red lead undercoat and grey duco still original. they are a solid cab with no rear side windows ,the windscreen doesn't fold down,the only part that comes off is the roof.it has a vacum transfer case and a tool box under the passanger seat.it's an f engine with the oil filler going into the sump and an external oil filter.the door glass is opreated by a leaver instead of the normal winder as in other landcruisers.it also has landcruiser stamped into the grill surround. round indicators with orange on one side and red on the other. i was told that there might of been a couple here for the donald campbell speed trails as service cars.but other then that no one seems to know anything about it. any info would be much appreciated.

Thiess were importing Landcruisers into australia since 1958 and selling to private buyers by 1959. Description sounds right for a 62 45.
Being that cruisers were privately available since 59 with FJ25's, and FJ45 since 1960, its hard to say who was the original owner unless you have original documents or owners manual. I doubt it was specifically bought over here for any special purpose, rather sold here by a Thiess Toyota Dealer to any individual. You could also do a freedom of infomation through your states Motor registery, this is costly and yeilds little results.
Either way there arn't many early models getting around aust. most were abused by farmers and the like until they ended up rotting under trees in the paddock.
Where abouts are you and whats your plans for it?

i'm in vic. and the cruiser came from sa truckstop.as far as what i'm going to do with it, not too sure at this stage.it's still all original and complete. with small amount of rust on the roof join line other then that just a bit of surface rust in places.so i don't know if to resto it or leave it as is and just clean it up a bit.motor is still fresh only doing 74000 miles,the gear box 1st and reverse gear is worn so i'm also looking for them or complete 3 speed column boxes.

Have you got any pics you can post up?
What ever you do with its still a pretty unique vehicle, im a purist, and like to see stuff stay or be resto'd to original, but at the end of the day its up to you.
You would be flat out finding a complete 3 speed box, or at least one that doesnt need rebuilding. Id look at rebuilding yours, even to the extent of asking for parts here on mud and importing them from the US, as 3 speeds seem more plentyful there.

I vote for the "clean it up and drive it" idea. This will give you the chance to get to know her, and will give you time to find and gather all the parts you will need to do a true restoration...especially if she is still so stock.

Being so old, and so stock, she will most likely have lots of FJ25/28 parts in her, so you might need to drop in the 25 section from time to time with some questions...oh ya, and someone is currently working of making repro lenses for those old, and rare turn signals you mentioned. Love those old slider windows!

1962 fj 45 lwb

i've owned it for about 9 years and drove it a bit. but since then i've stripped the box because the gears were worn,but haven't been able to find the gears yet. i've got a rebuilt 3 speed floor shift box but i'm pretty sure the gears aren't the same.the steering box has also been rebuilt,as well as the brake and clutch master cylinders. i was lucky to find 3 original kits for them.as far as everything else it workes pretty well.i've also got a couple of the chrome bonnet strips taken off when i started to strip it. i tried to put some pics up but they too big,i just have to work out how to do it. unless anyone out there knows how to do it and can help.

i.ve got photos of mine but can't shrink them enough to attach them.but i could e mail them to someone that could post them for me. i've talked to a few people that worked on the snowy mountains and they seem to think that they never had column shifts and are pretty sure that thiess didn't bring any here either.but it's not 100% verified. this one came from sa aust. also would any one know if they all came out with split rims. thanks

You can reduce the size of the pics and attach them, or host them somewhere else (picasa, photobucket....) and link to them using the little yellow "insert image button" at the top of the message box.

As far as the transmission goes, you are probably dealing with the early side shifting three speed. This is not the same transmission as the later top loading three speed. Both could be configured as column or floor shift three speeds. Hopefully one of the early 40 folks can post up pictures of the side shift tranny. Parts are not common between them. If it's original, this is what you have:

Nice!!! That is a rare 45 you have there.

Whoaaa!!! It kind of freaked me out seeing the 3 speed column shifter on the left side. I have driven many of RHD vehicles but never a column shift. I am using my 1965 45 pickup as a daily driver right now and it still has the column shift. I think it would be a little more difficult to shift the column with my left hand. I guess I would get used to it after awhile.

We might have a 3 speed side shift transmission around the shop if you are interested in keeping it original. Let me know and I'll see if I can't find one.

Nice truck. Any plans for it? I vote for cleaning it up and driving it.
