Hey guys,

I'm a Landcruiser lover and I'm finally looking to make my first purchse. I'm looking at an 85 FJ60. It has not been totally desmogged, but it has had the cat removed and the smog pump removed.

Anyone know where I can get replacements and have them installed at a reasonable price ??

Any help would be greatly appreciated !!

Thanks,

Josh

Tucson area FJ60

There is a pretty much picked over mid 80's FJ60 at the BeepBeep salvage yard in Tucson. Haven't looked to see if it still has the exhaust system - someone has already grabbed engine/tranny/front axle in the major systems.

Phoenix may have better yards in terms of machines you can pick over. Does anybody know if the FJ60 exhaust/cat has other models (40, 80) that are parts compatible for the new compadre?

What part of the state are you in?

Thanks for the intel guys !!

I'm in the PHX area. I'm actually in North Phoenix !!

I saw that landcruiser you are checking out on craigslist. The thing is the smog equipment is more than just a smog pump and a cat. If that landcruiser has truly been desmogged there are so many vacuum lines and diaphragms you gotta find and hook up the right way. Then if you don't get them hooked up right the 2f won't run right either. I know you said it hasn't been fully desmogged but are you sure the vacuum lines are there, there are like 50 billion of them.

I bought it this morning.

The guys at Toyowest, looked at it and all the vaccuum lines were there. It actually hasn't been completely desmogged.

I was trying to register it without emissions, but it would have to be as historic with no emissions and classic car insurance which would limit usage.

Does anyone have any ideas to either get the cat and smog done or to register without emissions ??

Thanks,

Josh

Emissions regs

Josh -

sorry to say, but think you're kinda boned on this one. Per my understanding of the emissions laws for the state of AZ, if you *live* and or *work* in either Pima or Maricopa counties, you have to pass visual inspection, in addition to paying the greenie tax.

Those lucky people who live or work or have a address outside of those two counties can just get by with paying registration, which includes a air quality tax as part of it.

While people do try to get around this by registering at a friends house, LE can and will ask people who they catch for other violations if they work in the Metro areas for both town. No way to win on that - lie, and get caught bad things happen. Tell the truth and get additional charges on top of your speeding ticket.

You are probably just going to have the bite the bullet and reinstall a smog pump, and a cat on that rig, and then be running well enough to pass emissions. Remember that visual inspection means just that - they verify its there, but no real way to verify its functional. If your rig is running well enough to pass emissions without a functioning smog pump or cat, well........

Oh, check your gas cap as well. Inspection now checks it to make sure its not venting any of that expensive gasoline vapor into the air.

Best of luck,

Glenn in Tucson

Recommend you find a shop that has emissions test capability, but is not hooked into the ADOT electronic system (e.g. Don't go to the smog station) and get them to test it for you. If you pass - go to the Smog Station.

You might want to install a Cat first (I read your other thread).

My experience with a '74 is these dudes don't do an under hood inspection - if it passes the tailpipe and gas cap test - you are good. Not sure about an '86.

I doubt most of these people know what a smog pump looks like.

Also there is a place called "Grundy" that sells classic car insurance by mail - Google "Classic Car Insurance" and you will find a bunch of links that specialize in it.

Feedback !!

So give me some feedback ...

If I install an aftermarket Cat and a smog pump, SHOULD it pass emissions ??

Thanks

That will be required to pass the visual inspection, and its about the only thing the state folks would be able to verify by eyeball, everything else is done via the sniffer machine.

How is it running right now? Does it run rough, or any noticeable tailpipe emissions - white, blue, black smoke, etc? Got a lot of "gas" smell in the exhaust?

There was an earlier response to find an independent garage who can sniff for ya, that isn't connected to the state system (Phoenix brothers - help a brother out here, got any recommendations?) and see if its running high on CO or hydrocarbons *now* without the cat and smog pump, and if so, how much over the limit.

Once you know that, adding the smog pump and cat will affect those numbers - its a question of how much do you have to pour into the emissions system to pass? The octopus that is the FJ60 2F emissions vacuum controls is complicated, but luckily the manual has the layout if you have to trace and replace. Should be able to buy 3mm(?) vacuum lines at NAPA in lengths, and then cut to fit as you replace old cracked lines, or run new lines to install where old ones were yanked.

Get it sniffed this weekend, and then post up the results, and what the mechanic at the shop recommends, but don't sign anything till you get some touchpoints from the CSC list.

Glenn in Tucson

Thanks for the input Glenn !!

Right now, I wouldn't have to worry about all the vaccuum lines, since they are all still in place. All I would need to do is hook up the smog pump in the engine bay and ann the cat ... BTW ... Does anyone know a shop that wouldn't brek the bank to add the cat back to the exhaust system, as well as install a header for me ??

Also, like Glenn said, if you know of anyone who has an emissions shop, that would be great !!

To answer your question Glenn, it smells a little "gassy", but nothing more than any older vehicle.

Just went through this two weeks ago with my 62. It failed for the first time. I took it home and got the FSM out and went over it and couldn't find anything. I ended up taking it to Carl's Car Care off 59th Ave. & Bell. They have a sniffer and they tested it. Ended up being both my original cats, they were finally gone after 230K. My exhaust system was also pretty rusted out with holes and leaks through out from the cats back so I had it replaced as well. They did good work and I couldn't even pick the parts up to do it myself for what they charged me. If you would like PM me and I will get you their contact info. Good luck!

Thanks for all the help guys !!

For now, I have decided to go with classic car Insurance.

After that, I am going to work on getting it emissions ready and make my DD!!:steer:

Double check with DOT on how to initiate this. My rig had current Az plates and current smog inspection when I went in and got my Historic plates. I did all this right before it expired. I don't know if there are any problems with doing it on a rig with expired or out of state plates. Good Luck. John
