I had some sliders welded on a while back and I recently removed the sliders but I still have the scab plates welded to the frame. I know this is going to be a PITA to do but I was wondering if anyone has done this and could help out. Thanks

Why not just leave the scabs? Are there still nubs on them that can be ground down? Removing the scabs might compromise the frame. Pics?

I wish I could leave them. I actually do need to remove them. I am putting some bolt on sliders on so I need to remove these. Here's some pictures.

I weld, but I'm not a welder. Why can't you bolt over those? If you really need them gone I think a cut-off disk would be the wheel of choice and I would go slow. I wouldn't dig into the frame, and I would paint right away. Jim might have better advice. I would be concerned about frame cracks in the future.

Thanks for your help

X2 on the grinding. If you have the clearance use a 4 1/2" angle grinder and grind the weld into the material to be removed. When enough material has been removed a stout blow w/a 5# hammer will do the rest; a chisel would help as well to pull the plate away from the frame (this way you only have to cut one side assuming that they're only welded on two sides.) Then clean up the surface weld on the frame. Hope this helps!

You have lots of hours of grinding ahead of you. Good news is that you can use a "flapper" wheel to remove the extra metal. This type of wheel is more gentle on the metal and does a better job of finishing rather than the traditional grinding disc material. If flapper wheels are not available, then use sand paper grinding disc (glued onto a rubber circular pad). Paper discs are flexible (due to the rubber pad) and works on uneven surfaces. Or use both as each type of material come in various courseness (50, 80, 100, etc).

Lots of hours of grinding......

Goes w/o saying, wear eye and ear protection for this project.

Good point. Flap disks are da'bomb. They are more gentle to the metal, and come in different grits ... 60, 80, 120, IIRC. They also don't heat up the metal as much, and work well on sheet metal. I have all three grits if you want to borrow one to try.

Thanks guys for all your help. Well my bolt on sliders should be here sometime next week or the following. I was looking at some other 4runners that have the shrockworks sliders I am getting to compare where the bracket will go. It looks like I will only have to grind down maybe half or the scab plates, hopefully. Anyone from Albuquerque know of a shop that might do this for me. I don't have the tools for grinding. Thanks

You can probably buy a grinder and safety glasses cheaper than any shop would charge to do this. I have one you can borrow if you want to tackle this yourself.
