Hey guys, have a weird problem today.... I installed a snorkel the other day, no big deal. Truck was fine. Then today I drove it up the road about 7 miles. Got to a stop
Light and the truck just died. After futzing with it for a bit it would only run with the air filter top lifted up off the base. Drove it home like that. Got home looked it over a little more, mass air flow has been repaired in the past and has sotter residue. I think it's ok but if there is a test procedure anyone knows about, I'll test it! Any other ideas? As of now the truck sits because it fires up and then dies instantly. Won't idle or move at all? Kinda stuck, any help would be greatly appreciated. It's a 94

First of all the 94 uses a VAF = Volume Air Flow meter not a MAF = Mass Air Flow sensor, both which measure intake air flow into the engine but are completely different animals.

Assuming "sotter" = solder, where do you see this? Did you pull the wiring connector off the VAF by removing the screws instead of releasing the metal clip?

VAF is not serviceable/repairable AFAIK. It may be messed up if someone opened it up and worked on it

Yes "solder" sorry brain is slipping! The black cover had been rtv'd on so I opened it up to investigate. There had obviously been some work done on the inside, some etape to protect wires from rubbing and a few solder joints. Anyone know of a modification to it?

The FSM very clearly outlines simple on vehicle and off the vehicle testing with a multimeter.
How long did it run normally after the snorkel was installed? Was the VAF harness connector removed during snorkel installation?
Back track through every step of the snorkel install to check your own work.

You didn't unscrew the screws did ya?

Is the black rubber air intake tube that runs from the filter box to the throttle body cracked? It tends to crack around the flex joint letting in unmetered air and causing idle problems, you can try wrapping the flex joint in duct tape as a temporary fix.

That would be my guess as well. When you lifted the air cleaner top you tightened up a crack in your intake hose which allowed the vehicle to run. Remove, inspect, repair or replace your air intake hose. If you unscrewed the two AFM screws then you now have a second problem that needs to be addressed.

Any recommended threads on afm adjustment or repair?

Most generally, it is replace with used operable unit.

Do a search for "94 VAF" and see what you get. I know there have been a couple folks that have "successfully" repaired theirs, BUT they are also the qualified electrician type people.

Search and Ye shall Find!
