OK here's the deal. 87 FJ60 from Colorado that never had an issue with emissions. Moved the beast to Texas 4 years ago and drove it a bit but mostly sat in my driveway(bought a mini with 200+hp). Started and driven every few weeks. Never got it registered. Move forward in time and split with the wife. Tried to get it to pass emission, hahaha. I have tried and tried again. Had a local cruiser mechanic work on it a bunch. Everything has been checked and rechecked. Carb rebuilt, all emissions components are working, new plugs, wires, timing etc. This thing is 6 times over the limit for CO at idle and just misses the HC. At 2500 rpm it's much closer. I need to figure this out soon as I need to sell the MINI and get the hell out of here. PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!

Hi CO on Driving Test or high Idle Test

Excessively rich mixture due to:

- Carburetor malfunction
- Dirty air filter, faulty choke
- Faulty computerized engine management and/or Oxygen Sensor - Inoperative or missing catalytic converter

Hi CO at Idle Test

Excessively rich mixture due to:

- Miss adjusted idle mixture
- Dirty air filter, faulty carburetor or choke
- Faulty Oxygen sensor
- Inoperative or missing catalytic converter

There is something i've heard about that's called "guarenteed to pass" or something like that. There is another one called Seafoam that I've actually heard goog things about- can't hurt... Good luck with it

There is not easy answer here without knowing more but I would focus on the carb if your CO is that high.

Who rebuilt the carb and when was it done? Sitting around a lot is not good for these carbs.

Just a suggestion; how 'bout selling the 60 instead of the mini. In 12 months, the 60 won't have to pass emissions here in Texas anymore.

Is there an O2 sensor on the FJ60's?

Yes, but it's not really an O2 sensor as on EFI vehicles.

Where in TX do you live? I was wondering the same thing about when you do not have to pass smog anymore here (24 years old and older in TX).

I belive its a temp sensor on the fj60, which provides feedback on the converter temp.

Austin. I have 11 months left before I hit the 24 mark but I can't wait that long! Tell me more about this "O2" sensor as you call it. By the way , can;t keep the MINI as I have a 100+ lb. Lab and he doesn't fit in the car. Believe me I would keep it if I could. 125 mph and solid as a rock on the highway!!

First off, there is no O2 sensor in a 60. Secondly, just because the carb was rebuilt, does not mean it was done right. Is it dribbling gas at idle? Is it adjusted properly? Obviously, if it's 6X limit at idle, that means there's lots of gas going in that shouldn't be there.

Do a search for Smog or Emissions.

Lastly, if you're driving 125mph on the highway, in a mini, you're an idiot. Don't care if you die, it's just that you'd prolly take me with you...

Guess you've never been on I-10 in West Texas at 3 a.m. Nothing to hit but deer.

As suggested before: search on "emission". E85 could help you pass if you mix it with ordinary gas - it'll make your HC & CO go down but your NOx will go up.

I have no problem with 125 on an interstate as long as it's not crowded & your tires & the rest of the vehicle are up to it. You'd better hope the deer you hit is tall (you have white tails in TX, no?) because a short one would take out your windshield at that speed & you with it.

Now for my normal noob nag: even though you mentioned TX in your post, if you put your town in your sig line your neighbors will volunteer to help.

LOL ! -

I was on that that stretch once in my life, 'bout 25 years ago, driving back from New Orleans to Los Angeles, deep-winter, in a Mazda 626 with an inoperable heater, freezing my ass off, 2am dark, and sure as sh!t a giant buck jumps out from nowhere and I slam on the brakes and slide all-over but don't hit the deer and no one hits me and I go on my way ... But I wasn't doing 125.

Still gives me goose bumps.

:meh:

What kind of timeframe are you dealing with? Do you have three days or a month? More than likely, it will be a simple thing. You'll want to bonk yourself in your head when you figure it out.

Though this might not be well received, I know plenty of shops in CA that will pass people with a little, ahem, grease, if you know what I mean. I never had to use such a shop, but an old roommate of mine did. He had a mid 90's MR2 with an imported motor from Japan that while it was really really fast, never seemed to pass emissions. Go figure. I think he paid a hundred "extra" dollars to for it to pass smog. Not the end of the world because in 11 months no more emissions for you right?

Good luck and take your time with the fix.

Try running a couple of tanks of premium gas through it. MIke

Since it was in Colorado, you might check to see if the carb jets are the right size and not larger or smaller to account for the altitude.

If you're inclined to work on it yourself, get the factory emissions manual and a vacuum gauge and start working through it. You should find the answer.
