Ebod,
Not sure what you mean by “worse than the factory ones.” Having no experience with factory lockers I can only offer anecdotes. Others can provide more informative advice. Factory lockers can be finicky and fail to operate at inopportune times and there is something about having to do some sort of maneuver as driver to engage them (help me out here factory electric locker dudes).
With a pneumatic as well as electrical components ARBs can also be temperamental. Leaky airlines, toasted solenoids or worse, leaking internal locker o-rings can be a hassle. And they aren’t always as on-and-off as people say. I’ve had the front ARB in my FJ 60 decide to stay engaged for a bit after I had switched it off. Not a good thing on high traction Moab slickrock when you need to turn the vehicle NOW. (In case you are not aware, an engaged front locker pretty much negates the steering wheel).
Everything is spendy in this business. I’m gonna be out about two grand for the hardware (two lockers, the ARB compressor, two gear sets, new carrier bearings and installation in the third members only). I’m doing the differential installation as well as mounting the compressor, plumbing and wiring myself. I’m also rebuilding the axles (knuckles, bearings and seals) which is probably going to run 3 or 400 bucks more for parts.
Finally, don’t shortchange yourself when you say you could never do the install yourself. The only real skill or knowledge needed is setting up the gears. Otherwise, if I can do it, anyone can, especially if your do not intend to rebuild the axles at the same time.
