Getting ready to put together my brake master cylinder/booster combination. I have the original booster from the '72 FJ40 (owned since 1976) and a booster from an '84 mini (unknown condition).

I have acquired a NIB FJ60 master and will mate it to the booster for the all-around disc brake setup I've installed.

My questions: Do I rebuild the original FJ40 booster (no issues in 300K miles) and mate to FJ60 master?

Or rebuild the mini booster?

Or find another/better donor booster?

Which of these options reduces/eliminates the need for pedal linkage/"pushrod" changes?

Best vendor to get rebuild kit?

Thanks for your help

When I was researching replacement boosters for the leaky one on my '80 40, everything I read said that there aren't any rebuild kits left out there for the 40 series boosters. I ended up replacing my booster & master with a setup directly out of a '91 4-Runner. Paid $70 for the pair, trimmed ~1/2" off the threaded rod from the booster to the brake pedal arm, and works perfect! Just an FYI, I also used the front calipers off of the same vehicle. The V6 calipers have larger diameter pistons and also larger pads than the 40 calipers.

Those are the same front calipers I already installed.

How well did that 4-Runner booster fit your firewall?

I have heard tales of woe trying to buy booster internal parts and then someone to do the work. I wouldn't even consider it. There are almost endless possibilities of Toyota MC's & boosters that will bolt together...pickups, Celicas, Supras, 60-series, 80-series,.....

The pushrod adjustments and pedal height mods are extremely easy. I wouldn't limit models or options from my search because of this apprehension. The biggest concern you should have is condition, bore size, booster diaphragm size (so it'll fit your firewall/existing/avail space) and the presence or absence of residual valves - drum need them, disk don't.

I fit a Lexus 450/80-series booster on my Marlin MC. The 450/80 booster was about 2" bigger in dia and considerably thinner than the dual-diaphragm 40-series I removed. Other than the aforementioned mods, I had to persuade the brake lines a little and mount the booster upside down so the vac port was oriented towards the intake.

Fits great, bolted right up with the pushrod trimming. My steup looks pretty much identical to the first photo posted by dgangle. The 4runner booster is a little larger in diameter than the stock 40 unit and much thinner. Looks just like the one that dgangle posted up.

Hi All:

Least changes? Use the original '72 drum-brake master & booster.

Best combo? Of the parts you have, I'd say the FJ60 master & the '84 mini-truck booster.

If you know that the booster works I wouldn't bother re-building it, or use it as a core when buying a re-built unit.

Good luck!

Alan

I used a booster from an '89 mini V6 odered from NAPA from a suggestion from a mud member. It fit with no mods to the pushrod, I just used a 1/2" thick plate on the firewall as a spacer, and it worked perfectly on my '72 with mini front discs.

TCinVA,

You got disks in rear as well? What master did you use?

No disks in rear yet, but I was told it would work. The master is from the same listing ('89 V6 mini 4x4)

Dave,

What did the 450/80 booster setup run you?

I bought the booster from Urban Cruisers in ATL for something like $50 and pulled it myself from a part-out that was pretty much gone.

Right place at the right time I guess.

you lucky individual you.....

Beats the price of new...some could prolly find cheaper....

I got an 88 V6 4Runner booster and master for $80 tonite. Yay!

GM Conversion

What about the GM conversion booster/mc combo? Seems my 71 FJ40 needs more boost than the original booster can provide w 4/wheel disc brakes!

My 40 with disc front drum rear stopped on a dime with 32"mud tires. We'll see how it does with 35-37" when it runs again. It felt like an overboosted 70's GM car.

GM conversion available at MAF for $$$ prolly.

I also did a gm conversion on my 72 disc frt drum rear. I like it fine good stopping power. The only thing I would do different is to buy a ajustable proportion valve in lue of a preset. Not sure why the one i have works fine. my oem took a dump and this was just a lot cheaper than going back with yota stuff.

IMO GM SWAP IS THE WAY TO GO.

Please post up with the GM booster and master part#'s.

I also have disc front and drum rears. I have been having big troubles trying to get my brakes to work. I replaced my brake booster with one from 76 FJ40 had to mount it upside down to get it to fit, would this matter in having it operate correctly? This didn't work either. I am considering to du the dis brake conversion in the rear asap funds are available.

You say our options are the '89 mini V6 or 84 mini truck booster and FJ60 master.

Please help. Thanks.
