Need advice for purchasing a used LX, LC or GX

Hi!

My fiancée and I are relocating to Montana for a job. He’s leaving his Honda S2000 here, so we’re shopping for a new car that will be an addition to my new gen AWD Rav4. We’ve been looking for a 4WD 4.7L V8 SUV, specifically the GX 470, LX 470, 100 series LC and 4runners. Any opinions on one model being a more solid choice than another? Ideally, we don’t want to spend more than 13k if we can get away with it.

This week we are looking at a:
- 07’ LC with 182,000 miles, single owner, well maintained, $18,000 asking. I suspect it’s been used for towing a boat.
- 99’ LX 470 with 195,000 miles, multiple owners, has maintenance records, told it runs like new, claim no rust, asking $13,500. Used on a farm.
- we have a 04’ GX 470 getting a PPI. We found a few things during our own inspection that aren’t deal breakers but need to know more about. They are asking $13,000 but willing to go down.

Because our budget is a limiting factor, we have gone and back forth about whether this should be 1) a reliable car that fits our 13k budget 2) a cheap used car that will make the journey and save our money for a different car a few years from now 3) increase our budget for something “newer”. Looking for a used Toyota in KY has been extremely frustrating as well because we are in the rust belt.

I would love some external advice from the car community about our model choices. Unlike my fiance, I have never purchased a used car and am not familiar with car mechanics. I personally prefer the LX and LC for their cargo options, interior design and body style.

Thanks in advance.

These are really old vehicles at this point. They will need lots of attention and I think it will quickly eat into your budget. They are reliable, but age wins and parts aren't cheap. Why aren't you both just taking your cars? I would think the Rav4 can handle any bad weather needs.

Thanks for your input.

My car is great. It hasn’t let us down in conditions when we needed the AWD like snowy mountain passes or KY hollers. It’s the one we primarily use, but he’s moving out there a couple months before me and we need two cars. His car won’t be usable during the winter in Billings, MT. Here, a mild winter state, it can’t get out the neighborhood after light snow.

I’m leaning toward a reliable cheap car that will get him there and can be used as a local commuter until we upgrade later. My car can fill in for other travel needs. Trying to be the most practical.

Thanks!

If there's an option to leave the S2000 behind and not take it to Montana just yet I would have done that too. If there's an 07 100 with that asking price, I guess I'd be looking at that but looking *for a history of* transmission/diff driveline services along with a cold test drive if you suspect boat towing. I don't think id be after the LX at this point to keep the selection process a little simpler.

i have the same problem with rust belt cant find anything only big problem with most Toyota trucks is rust and the timing belt on the 4.7 needs done every 90k not cheap if its old with lot of miles you best like fixing cars my advice take some of your budget go to dealers look at a newer 4 runner or Lexus gx460 like 2014-2018 and finance should cost 20k or less still check for rust on the newer ones that's what I'm thinking of doing my self.

You’ll pay more for the LC badge vs. LX, but same vehicle. That first 100 sounds decent being a one owner, but I’d need to see pics and more documentation/info to really know if it’s a good deal.
$13k is a very limited budget. I’d look for a 4Runner or Tundra.

Thanks, everyone! Part of why I posted on here is because I personally feel these prices are a lot of money for a 20 years+ car, regardless of the following or testimonies these vehicles have. Your opinions are helping me decide if these used cars are reasonable for us at this time.

Buy yourselves a well loved Subaru Outback. Great Montana vehicle. Great on gas mileage and they are fantastic in snow. 🤠

You might consider a 1st Gen Sequoia as well. Will usually be much cheaper than those other models you listed, but not really that different, just a little bigger. Main things to check for on those are replacing lower ball joints with OEM parts, and then the usual rust and timing belt that all those other models have.
