any garage door opener can be "battery backed up" by purchasing a 700 VA UPS from office max for 50 bucks. mount it on the ceiling near your opener and plug it in. you will have the same effect.

i have a chain driven craftsman. works great. i had to adjust it for closing last weekend. first time in 5 years.

FWIW I have found the screw drive to be a lot smoother than the old chain drives they replaced.

FWIW, I have a linkmaster in my new house. The muther - fawker forgets the code to the remote about five times a week.

I have smashed the door unit into the wall twice and have yet to find satisfaction. I'm definitely going back to a Sears drive unit.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! :bang:

Whatever you choose just make sure it has the type of remote that can be modded into your 80 :grinpimp:

I did something similar (before I had kids).... now back to my question!

I have a Genie screw drive and would get another one. I like the way it opens fast. I don't think noise is so much an issue as most of it seems to come from the door anyway rather than the opener.

Belt break?

Yep. One just broke for no good reason, the other got out of alignment in a place where I couldn't see it and there was some metal rubbing on the belt, which wore it away until it finally failed. When I took it down, the motor case was filled with belt shavings.

Absolutely zero trouble with my two Genie screwdrive units.

don't get one that has an opener that some low life with tronics skills can run a wideband emitter through and open from the street... (not that I know which those would be...)

(my house has 3 Ultralift / MOM screw drives. First problem was recent, I had one go dead after 17 years. Not too bad and could be as simple as a fuse or a wire or something, don't know yet...)

I'm looking at a wall mounted lift like the Lift Master 3800 because of my 2 post lift a opener hanging from the ceiling would be in the way. Lift Master 3800

If you have a torsion spring above your door it will work and it keeps your ceiling clear.

Ther are a few install videos on youtube that show you how it works.

I installed two Genie screw drive units. One replaced an old Craftsman chain drive. Screw drive is the only way to go IMHO.

I've got the Genie screw-drive. It's very fast. Too loud in my opinion. Friend has a belt-drive unit. I'm going with belt drive next time. The noise isn't worth the 2.23 seconds saved in opening. Both used in cold climates (Michigan).
