I just bought an 06 and navigation isn't updated. Maps are out of date and nav functions don't seem To work do I need to register w Toyota or sign up w some 3rd party service to get full function?

Thx

No need to register with Toyota or anyone else. The navigation DVD updates are issued approx. every October and cost $169 from a dealer. You will be able to get the 2013 map updates. I'd try that first to make sure it's not a faulty DVD in there right now However, the new DVD only updates the maps and doesn't change the functions. If your navigation functions are not working like the manual says they should, there is something wrong with the navigation system. On my '04, the nav system DVD is under the passenger seat.

Not sure what you mean by "nav functions don't seem to work" to search correctly the address/destination you're looking for has to be in the user set search region states, this is in the menu set up. Being a recently acquired vehicle it's possible it came from another nav region, hence can't find an address you're keying in. The nav region also resets to its default if the battery power has been removed ( at least that's how gen2/3 systems work so your gen system could behave differently). Easy fix, if this is your issue, just go to menu, set up, select appropriate region.

Meant the buttons aren't hot. It tracks location but that's it. Won't allow me to hit any buttons other than basic map functions like zoom. If I try to hit a hotel icon or enter an address those buttons aren't hot.
Will dig deeper into set up. Tried some and got nowhere.

Are you doing this while you are moving? If so it will limit the functions. Try it when you are stopped and see. If that's the problem then you are in luck, because there is a hack ;)

If you are sitting still, it sounds like a problems with the CPU/DVD unit under the passenger seat. The 06 has Gen4 system so the unit will have part number Denso, 86841050090. Ebay usually has a lot of these available.

@WoodyCreature is this hack permanent? Going to try it tomorrow!

@ESnyder did you ever resolve this issue?

Everyone else, what is the latest version that can currently be obtained?

I purchased a bootleg off eBay, and it actually works, but I am wondering if there is a more recent version?

U08 13.1 is what I got, which is supposedly from 2014.

NEW LATEST Toyota Lexus U08 13.1 Navigation GPS Map Update DVD Gen 2/3 EAST WEST | eBay

It’s definitely a bootleg: Blue/Purple instead of silver, and the label looks like lightscribe, maybe? It works fine though, so I’m not complaining, plus it was only $14.95.

The only complaint, and it’s minor, is that I can hear the Nav DVD drive reading this disk when it is loading any data. This is likely because it is a bootleg.

I seem to recall that the Nav disk you purchased is the last update for Gen 2/3 nav systems that will ever be released. No future updates are planned by Toyota.

from a random Lexus dealer website:
"For vehicles using GEN2/3 hardware, the final hardware update is v13.1, released Fall 2013. The final update for vehicles using GEN4 hardware is v15.1, released Fall 2015"

It’s sad even the gen 4 stopped getting updates. I wonder if we could group up and get Toyota to start making updates again, or give us the ability to make our own updates.

Has anyone looked into creating their own update disk? Could be a neat little project.

I downloaded the 13.1 Toyota/Lexus software via Pirate Bay and burnt it to a DVD, and it worked fine in my wife's 07 Subaru Outback (has the same navigation system as Lexus). You have to be sure to buy the right type of DVD-R that has the high capacity, can't remember the name.
Can't get anything better than 13.1 though, which is pretty outdated at this point.

If only my laptop had CD/DVD slot. Damn MacBook Pros. If anyone's burning copies of @KFunk740's link, and wants to make a few more... I bet your fellow 'Mudders would buy you a beer... no, really.

Yep, I thought about going that route, but decided against it.

So, it needs to be a dual-layer DVD?

I could technically just copy the disks I got off eBay if anyone is in desperate need of the updated disks, but I've seen them on eBay for as little as $9 with free shipping. Sure, they probably just downloaded it off the 'bay, and burned it, but I think that's worth $10 of their time. That's time and effort I saved to do something else, like install my Bluetooth adapter. :-)

Yep, DVD+R DL it says in comments there. By the time you buy a pack of those and waste your time downloading it, you could've just given the dude on ebay your few bucks. I probably still have some of the DVD+Rs laying around and could burn some, but I've got too many other things to do right now.

External USB DVD/Blueray burners are pretty cheap these days. Cheapest option (if you factor in your time, plus cost of needed materials) would be to just buy one off eBay for $10 - $15 though.
