After sitting in the cold at the airport for a couple of days, my screen was very dark on the NAV display when I started up. It returned to normal in about 15 minutes of driving.

Everything else worked with no issues.

Any experiance on this? Can you just replace the screen and not thw whole Nav unit.

There seemed to be a few similar threads, but the discussion focused on features not working from the screen

How cold? I recall older technology screens having issues below 20 degrees. In 2005 I spoke with a Garmin tech that discouraged exposing their automotive products to freezing temps for an extended period of time.

Around 30 degrees, but outside for a day

Probably the liquid part of LCD was affected by the cold. If it returned to normal after it warmed up, why replace?

Not sure I want to do that. Not sure I want to drive for 15 minutes before I can use the screen if I need to either

Got ya, I thought you just meant dim, not unusuable. My Alpine deck gets dim when it's subzero, but the touchscreen still works.

It is really dim and dark

This is normal for older LCD screen technology. It could also mean you LCD panel is getting old and may be on it's way out.

As for replacing just the screen, well if you find a donor navigation unit and perform the surgery yourself, then it may be possible. However there is no guarantee it won't have similar issues.

Mine was like this this morning (35F overnight). Once it warmed up a bit, all was OK. I have seen the same thing in my RV with the LCD TVs. A little operating time and everything seems to be OK.

IIRC, that was never an issue with our '03, even after being left out overnight in well into subfreezing weather.

I've never had an issue with my '05 either, it sits at negative double digits occasionally during the winter.

Good info - Thanks

Happens pretty regular in the cold. Real dim can't m,ake out much, in a minute or two can start to make out things and 10-15 minutes later, everything is fine.

Granted, I am not in as cool a climate as you are, but at 30F, my screen starts out pretty dark, but gets to normal brightness in 30-45 seconds ... I think I am not going to worry until it dies.

Dragging up an old thread, but something surprised me

So the screen stayed dark when cold when until it warmed up after turning on a screen, couldnt see the rear camera view or dial the phone so I would start the car and then enable a screen like info till it warmed up

I was afraid of it wearing out early so I keep the screen in the off mode.

I noticed if the screen isnt left in the off mode, then the problem doesnt happen when starting up the truck.

As Spock would say, interesting
