I had my 2021 4Runner a scant 6 months and wasn't a fan, but boy do I miss the cup holder! I carry my 32oz Nalgene damn near everywhere I go and our 23 GX460 doesn't accomodate it. Wife bought some inserts off of Amazon and they are bulky and look awful. Is there a way to take apart the cup holder and modify it to allow for the Nalgene (3.5")?

My wife an I use Hydroflasks (and similar products) which you can find sizes that fit great! They're also awesome for keeping your water icy cold.
Nalgene's were the go-to in the last century but I hardly ever see them any longer. Everyone that carries a beverage (that I see) uses these doubled walled vacuum sealed stainless steel containers.
If you don't have one yet, treat you and your wife and you'll probably never look back.
Yet, if you feel you have to have something lighter, I purchased several of these for my family this past Christmas:
Amazon product ASIN B015RZTPJYThey are light and the best part is when you're hiking or wherever, as you finish it, you can just roll it up and stuff it. You don't have that big 'ol Nalgene bottle.
But just my opinion and as I like to say opinions are like belly buttons, everyone has one.

You need this. Absolute game changer.

We have a ton of bicycling water bottles around and use those in the GX on trips. They fit in the stock cup holders. The really squishy ones don't play well with the spring loaded flap at the back but the normal stiffer ones work fine.

Ha-ha! Totally forgot about cycling bottles since I don't race or ride any longer. Actually I never really used cycleing bottles, when I rode I always wore a Camelback. It was a lot easier and convenient to use than water bottle in my down tube.

I did 7+ hour long road races that required many bottle handups over the race, and my pit crew wife often supported team mates in addition to me, so I ended up with a ton of bottles. I quit racing six years ago and we recently threw out a couple grocery bags of bottles. I still have a lot.

These require the "skinny jean" bottles. (which I have)

Not aware of anything that will accommodate a Nalgene. Sorry, man. You'll have to sell the GX and get a Subaru, I guess...

I keep a couple of water bottles in the door. Individually they aren't 32 oz but together they are.

Ok I feel bad. I didn't realize those Nalgene bottles were fat. My mistake. Time for the OP to get different bottles. LOL

Exactly what we do. Since we don't have kids any longer, we keep the largest water bottles that'll fit in the rear passenger doors, 4 bottles in all. Always there, always ready. ;)

I usually have a gallon behind the drivers seat for the dog anyway...
