Well I took an FJ Cruiser out today.
Some first impressions.

First the good:
Awesome brakes - this thing stops on a dime.
Good build (it's a toyota)
mirrors are great to drive with
Feels solid
Good power (if you like gas engines)
3rd front wiper is cool and useful
Has good forward visibility (but the 80 series has more)
Nice feeling truck, but not without its problems

Bad:
Transfer case hangs down (has skid - but your can still hang on it)
gas tank hangs down (has skid - but your can still hang on it, dent it, or put a hole in it)
Poor rear visibility - very bad
Small rear window hatch - not very useful
Hard to get in and out of back seat (smacked my head)
Not much back seat room ( not for adults)
Hard for the backseat passenger to close their own door (bad angle/design - I doubt a kid could do it).
Lots of Rad/ AC stuff hanging low in the front
No rain gutters - how can you add after-market racks - roof top tents, etc...?

Quirks:
Rear locker only works in 4low
I prefer the older split tailgate - not one door

Wants:
Diesel!!! This one is big for me
Solid front axle - would be nice, but could live with independent.
Fix the items on my "bad list" - especally the rear doors/backseats and the visability.
Not enough room to sleep in - can work around.
Tires can be changed, so I am not worried about those.
Would prefer a split folding tailgate like the 80 series.

I never tried the truck offroad, or in 4low.
I was on my lunch hour and did not have time.
If I was more serious I would try it offroad.
But to much needs fixing for me to get it.

Anyways, my feeling is:
The FJC is without a doubt a nice truck.
Very solid to drive. But I think there is some design issues.
The suicide doors look nice but are not functional.
There is not enough back seat room.
Rear visibility is poor for driving and off roading.

As an advertised off road truck, I would of liked to see Toyota do a better job with tucking things up more - mainly the transfer case and the gas tank. To much stuff hanging down. The gas tank is right there to be hit (just like a 4runner).

To me it feels to much like a 4runner, and not enough like a land cruiser. I don't want to come down to hard on Toyota, because they did build it, and try to make something with the offroad in mind. But to me its to much like a 4 runner. Toyota made to many design compromises to make it look nice. In my opinion, its a nice truck, but not a Land cruiser. :( Toyota did a good job, but they are capable of doing so much better. I think they missed the mark, it will still sell, but it needs some things addressed. If Toyota fixes the issues at hand I would reconsider.

I will take my 80 series cruiser any day of the week. Sorry Toyota.
Anyways, that is my opinion, so please take it as that.
I really wanted to like the FJC, and I tried to like it.
If they address some of the issues I speak of, I would consider it again.

Cheers,
Nick

I would say the FJC is more like a 2+2.
Not a 4 person truck or for a family.
The truck can carry 4 people, but I would not want to do it on a regular basis.
Lots of room for 2 people and gear/luggage.
It would be cramped with 4 people and gear/luggage.

The FJC is very nice, but it still has some refinments left to go.
If Toyota fixes those, they will have something really nice.
Maybe something with bigger rear doors, larger backseats and with better thought in the undercarraige.

But it does still feel solid. No doubt it is a good truck.
I don't want to slam the FJC. It's nice, but its not quite there yet, at least for me.

To be honest:
-In Canada, I would suggest people look at a nice JDM import instead (pick your favorite model).
-In the US: Look for a used 100 series for the same price.

Cheers,
Nick

Nick - very good road report I must say!! - You make excellent comments on the design issues. I know it has major blind spots, poor visibility through back window as well as back seat.I still love the looks of this truck and just knowing it's a ''TOYOTA'' will probably sell me over. There is just my wife & myself so backseat room is not an issue. Basically just want a ''fun'' DD with the occasional weekend offroad camping expedition. Tim

Overall nice truck, I have kids and it is not a good design for the little man cubs. However , Like Tim, if it was me and the wife only (or if I had a million bucks kicking around) I would without hesitation add it to my arena of cruiser's...... Congrats Tim on your new travels. Keep up the pics!!!!

The FJC will probably suit your needs nicely then.
If you are not using it much in the offroad, then the stuff hanging down will not matter so much, nor will the backseats if you don't need them. The visibilt issue could be dealt with. I still think its a good truck, I would just like to see Toyota tweak it more.

You might also want to consider a JDM import.

Read both reviews here, very good.
I bought mine ( silver, auto, rear locker, rock rails, that is it) last week, it should be here by June they said, but maybe before that if they can get another one "demaxed" to the hilt that was due to come in later.

Now on the locker only working in 4 low, that is the same way the 3rd gen 4Runners and Tacomas work.

But there is a hack you can do to make the locker engage when it is in 4 hi with just a few snips of a wire.

I read about it on Yotatech in the past, but I can not find it right now.

"To me it feels to much like a 4runner, and not enough like a land cruiser."

That is because it is a 4-runner/Taco, and not a Landcruiser.

I know it's based off the 4runner platform with a Taco drive train.
But they are advertising it as a cruiser.
I guess my problem is more with Toyota marketing.

Nick

Okay, one more pet peeve.

Where are the grab bars and handles for the passengers? There is no grab bar for the front passenger, nor is there overhead handles for the rear passengers. It is being advertised as an offroad vehicle afterall.

Sorry to whine here so much.
I guess I am just disappointed because of all the hype.
I think it needs more functional. It's so close but so far away.

I really hope Toyota is reading this, and decides to address some of these issues.
Please Toyota feel free to contact me, I would love to help you refine the FJC.
Can you please work with us to make it address some of the issues.

Cheers,
Nick

thanks for the write up
would be great if they do address the concerns you and others have.
seems to be some common issues people have with it but other than that a great little truck.

That is my problem with the FJC as well. Its not so much the car, just the way Toyota is marketing it as a Landcruiser. From what I have seen and read it looks like a great addition to the Toyota 4X4 line, and I have been very critical of it in the past. Its a cool car, just not yet for me.

Well they are all based on the Land Cruiser Prado, so technically, they can market it as a LC.
Mechanically, it's got the goods- and compare to any other new rig it will hold it's own. It's not SFA but Toyota will never do that again.

There is a ton of goodness built into the V6 and frame.

There will never be another 80 series, that is too bad but it's reality.

I wish they brought the 3-door Prado here. Much more practical & usable body but the FJC has what you need in the USA= tons of charisma. It's got "what is it? appeal"

Hopefully it lays the groundwork for more offroad-focused Land Cruisers in the US. It's not only a product, it's a dip into the waters to gauge interest if "hardcore" OEM rigs are marketable.

The 100 series is still a great truck. And toyota does make the 105, a SFA version of the 100 series. It just does not come to North America. I wish it did.

Toyota still makes great trucks (for the rest of the world), they just don't bring them to North America. I wish Toyota would give us the option of ordering the cool trucks that everywhere else gets.

Cheers,
Nick

"Well they are all based on the Land Cruiser Prado, so technically, they can market it as a LC."

Was it because the different sized frames were built in the same plant, is that how it is based on the Prado? Just wanted to find out how it was technically a Prado since none of the overall dimentions are the same?

I am sure it will be a capable car. I have read some mixed reviews on it compared to others in its class. Some have it on top, some don't. But you can never trust magazines since they always have another interest they cater to. I would never think an H3 could out wheel it, but that was a conclusion that one of the magazines came to. I don't believe it. They need to offer a special addition as has been suggested before. Then I might consider it.

they all share the same mechanicals, engine and versions of the same frame. The Tacoma is the cheapest made, the GX the most expensive of this platform.

In Toyota's FJC advertisments they say "modified LC Prado "
