My rig smells like I'm driving a gas tank with wheels!?

Ever since putting the hard top on my 40 ('69) for winter, it seriously smells like I'm breathing in massive amounts of gasoline vapor. Considering the tank is under the pass. seat - I know I am!

Has anyone dealt with this before? It's really not good. Would it just be maybe a bad seal, or is this normal?

Help!

I had the same thing. First I found that the short piece of hose between the fuel filler and fuel tank was leaky. I replaced it and thought I was done.
Still smelled so I pulled out the tank only to discover a few holes in the bottom . Now I have a new tank (and no gas smell)!

what year truck ?

check the lines to and from the tank, and the fuel level sensor - it can leak there

if you have the lovely and unique to like 10 months of production evaporation device in the bench, the lines to and from it can work themselves loose - BTDT

I had my 70 do same thing. Checked all hoses, filler, both pick ups and then finally pulled tank to find multiple little holes that only really showed up after I took it to radiator shop for boil out. Order a new one from Mudrak.

I just fixed mine. Replaced the seal on the sending unit, and used locktite on the screws.

I also had to scrub the hell out of the top of the tank, because of gas residue on it. Problem fixed.

Damn. So I'll hope for a leaking seal or sensor (it's a 1969) and move to pull the tank if need be from there.

What's deal with these little holes, where do they come from? They can't be repaired huh?

What did you guys have to shell out for new tanks?

THANKS GUYS -

I hassled with the tank on my 73 for a year or so only to end up replacing it. I took it to the radiator shop and had it cleaned and lined, soldered over pin holes etc and ended up replacing it. IIRC it cost me a cool 300 bux. Replaced the lines etc and no more gas smell,

I took my tank and leaky heater core to the local radiator shop. They quoted me an obscene amount to fix the tank, but fixed the heater core for $12. I ended up with a poly tank which I am happy with so far.

I know, I've read all the bad things here about the poly tanks but I have a friend who has one and swears by it. I've had mine for about 6 weeks now and no gas smell (hard top on!).
I used a gasket sealer on the fuel sender, and plugged up the extra ports. I did have to modify the fuel filler a bit, but you can get an aftermarket one that'll fit perfectly. It's cheap too. My .02
