My "New" 2000 LC!

Thanks for helping me answer questions/etc for the last few weeks here. It really helped me jump into a Hundy! Couldn't have done it without my buddy Mark, either.

Anyway, two weeks ago I was involved in an unfortunate accident where my beloved green Sequoia was totaled. Almost 300k miles, and was a part of the family. Luckily State Farm was generous with their payout and I was able to sweat for a few weeks over Criagslist, Classifed ads, and Autotrader looking , HOPING to quickly find a Hundy (the RIGHT one) I could snag for the right price.

Finally found it and Pulled the trigger. A beautiful CLEAN, SE Toyota (no road salt) 2000 Land Cruiser with 215k miles. Probably needs a steering rack and some new pulleys- but everything works. Including the Antenna. This thing is clean, and I got it for a STEAL taking into account the condition and price for a lot of other LCs in my area (most were in rough shape or super high miles).

Champagne/Pearl with Sand and "Oak" (I think) interior. I like the basic black console, not a big fan of that wood laminate.

Alaska, right now- just getting it "right". The steering rack is pretty bad, either it's that or perhaps the PS pump (some whirring at extreme left/right) because there is what I can only currently describe as a "bearing noise" on that side of the motor.

There's some clunk in steering and play. Turning at slow speeds is not fun. PS fluid level is fine. The shocks are F'ED, probably still the original shocks on there. Nothing terrible in terms of repair. Drivable, but annoying.

Same year as mine.
Try cleaning the screen inside the powersteering fluid reservoir. Many times it is clogged. Add valvoline ATF.
Get new heater T's (near the engine fire wall next to the brake pump)
OEM shock is about $30 at camelback toyota in AZ.
How is the T-Belt?

Supposedly, the timing belt was changed at 190k.. no sticker though. The original owner is sending me ALL the service records MOnday, so hopefully it'll be in there. The engine is SOOO clean, not even a drab of oil around the valve cover gaskets. The lady LOVED this truck and cried when it was sold.


I didn't see any FAQ on removing the PS reservior, any tips?

Removing the reservoir is pretty straight forward.

I may have over done it when releasing pressure on the tab to slide the reservoir off, but it just slides off of this bracket.

What are your symptoms for "Probably needs a steering rack"? My '98 needed steering rack bushings, an inner tie rod and sway bar end links, all were easier to accomplish than I anticipated.

Shocks are cheap and easy, my suggestion is get some from Toyota.

It's just a guess, really. There's some play in the steering (very slight "notch" feeling when the turn engages) and steers SUPER heavy if you try and hard turn (like pulling into a parking space from a stop). While moving, still heavy, but better when turning left than when turning right. Thing is, there's no leaks in the rack anywhere as far as I can tell. Tie rod ends seem OK (I'm no expert). All this could be PS pump filter starving the PS pump from fluid (trying this fix tomorrow) or Steering rack bushings- though I'd expect just the bumpy/nothchy feeling if it was JUST the steering rack and not so much the HEAVY steering. So, my focus will be on the PS system first.

Toyota Shocks, yeah not a bad idea. Gabriels or Monroes not worth saving a little money in that regard? Either way, I need shocks bad, and this I KNOW it needs.

I like the Toyota shocks and they're like $32 a piece.

Additional Question: once I get the reservoir off, does it separate into two parts? are there any ORings or anything to replace while it's off?

SUCCESS! The PS reservoir screen was CAKED with junk. When I put the suction pump in there (the one I use to extract my oil), once the fluid ran low it started to suck in GLOBS of whatever the hell- like gummed up hose deposits maybe from the old hoses? Anyway, steering is MUCH improved. But, I still have bubbles coming up even after going end to end with the steering.. What's the best way to get rid of air in the system? Will it work itself out after a while?

I should note, it took LONGER to get those stinking clips back on than it did to remove/clean/reinstall the reservoir. Hoses to be replaced soon..
