My little project

The big project would be a rally/challenge type truck, so it could be ran in the Outback Challenge or something similar. High speed winch, cage, shorten the frame a bit, beef up the front end, bigger lift, better shocks, tweeked turbo diesel, Dual GPS, lockers, lots of custom work etc etc. I'd need a partner for that type of project though = a pricy undertaking just for a week and a half of whiteknuckling it,

:D

Always been a fantasy too. Any of those challenge type events that test mettle, skill, stamina...etc have always taken my attention.

Exactly, it's just coming up with the cash for it! If we had something like that in Canada I'd be in!

Wait a second - hmm, now I am starting to think - we should do something like this in Canada. We don't have billabongs though, but we have good ole swamps and creeks.

Something to think about.

forget anything to do with water... oceans and fisheries will shut it down in a heart beat... they are the gestople of the waterways...this includes flood plains, vreeks, swamps, puddles ANYTHING with water in it...

Also, the breaks on this truck are huge, the rotors min thickness is 30mm compared to the 19mm on the 80 series, the rotor and caliper is similar to the new tundra brakes in my estimation - tons of breaking power in such a little truck - the rear drums are huge as well.
.

Drums eh,the oz models got discs all round after a model upgrade in 95;) I dont mind the drums, the discs are over rated and the handbrake a diabolical POS:mad:

Ya, pretty big drums, I'm with you on the ebrake, a brake at the transfer case would be great.

Wayne, out west it might be hard (too many tree huggers focusing on 4wds when they should be going after loggers), but i bet it could still be done here, or just make a different event, i think it is doable.

That looks absolutely fantastic! Great job!

i would be very interested in helping set up an event...sounds like my kind of challenge BUT don't fool yourself, if Oceans and Fisheries gets wind of it you will be shut down in short order...them boys are a NASTY bit of work...

I would think that Quebec would be great for an event like that, as long as it brings tourism and money into the local economies they would let it happen. They also love international type racing so I am sure it would work.

Here's a little video of my truck, took my son for a drive a couple of days ago. The trail usually has about 2 more feet of water on it - but has seemed to dry up.

12V Aisin winch with factory roller fairlead. I'm going to get synthetic rope and a hawse fairlead soon, I want to see what the rope is like.

The bumper is a custom set up using the frame extensions from the jdm chrome bumper. The winch is mounted on top of a 6 inch piece of Channel that is welded between the frame extensions. The outer bars are rollcage material - made by a rollcage builder - he also fabbed my rock sliders.

The winch is off an HDJ81, I am going to try it for a while then switch to an 8274 when I have the money, so far it works great though, the gear case is hefty and I like the idea of tranny fluid in it.

I bet that young fella is real proud of his dads 79 series;)

I know the 1st time I let my son drive my 75 series he sent off about 10 text messages to tell everyone:D

Oh ya, he loves it, he makes up landcruiser songs all day long - drives the wife nutty.

Gold Boy, ya I noticed that as well. Mine deflects trees and houses the winch, I will be adding some lightforce 170's to the headache bar as I dont want the lights under water. The bumper was an experiment but heavier than I expected. Once I remove the steel cable and add syntheitc rope it should lighten it up a bit.

 synthetic is an idea that i have been toying with as well, will be interesting how it works out for you.

so.... what is the pay load capacity of the flat deck?

i would be very tempted to save up and buy a Alaskan camper (who will build a custom fit). also i use Firestone air bags on my 1/2 ton chev pickup, i would highly recommend them for pay load stability....

:)

not sure what the capacity is - although I am sure there has been a couple ton in it. The origianl spring pack was very beefy and could take a very big load.

From now on it will only hold my snowmobile, and hopefully a yamaha rhino (might buy this fall). I will be putting an aluminum flatdeck on it to lighten up the back end a bit.

wow.... that's much more pay load than i expected. you could easily put a camper on the back... awesome

maybe i should get one -

Way to go Louis! Looks awesome!! Let's get those cable lockers installed in my 73 and hit the trails...

How about Oiseau Bay/ZEC St Patrice (QC) vicinity for an Outback Challenge style circuit?? With 417 acres of private land joined with thousands of square kilometres of bush and countless miles of killer logging roads, it'd be hard to beat. We should talk - maybe take the trucks out later in the summer for a test run.

Again, congrats on the build up!

Peter

Hi Peter, your lockers are ready, the front end is completely rebuilt and waiting for your truck. Let me know when you can come by.

I was thinking about a trip up to that area, I am going in to my camp via that route on July 19th to 22nd. When can we go and chek it out?
