Just a couple of quick comments on the technicals ...

1. I believe busting front diffs is not uncommon when wheeling on 100 series rigs with ATRAC. With the common solution being to remove the front driveshaft and front hub flanges, the snap rings are always part of that conversation. My front diff is fine; I just had a snap ring failure. How? I'm not sure. I had just replaced the front wheel bearings, and the DS was the first side I did, and I had never done the job before. I did measure the distance between the flange and the snap ring, and it was less than 0.2mm, per the FSM Perhaps I just got unlucky, perhaps I did something wrong.

2. I do believe a large socket, which would be big enough to go over the circular part of the hub flange housing, would have worked. However, you'd need a bolt too, since those bolts I used are part of the cv axle puller kit.

I just can't convey to you folks know how happy/relieved I am that I did make it without having to spend unreasonable money at a Mr. T dealership along the way to get fixed, along with how welcoming this clubhouse is. When I arrived in Eugene, I sent not one, but two emails off to the local "club" about joining and never heard back. Quite the different experience here, thank you!

Now, for title/tag/DL etc. Has anyone done it recently from out of state into the ABQ area? Any unusual headaches?

One last thing: I do plan on getting my rig into excellent mechanical shape, and then start shopping for a 200 series. If I find the right 200 series, I will be letting the LX470 go, hopefully to a local.

After reading that long thread about the C clip issue, I'm now well versed. Where did Toyota go wrong on this application? Seems like an epidemic!

Please buy your Toyota OEM parts from American Toyota on Alamdeda/I-25 to receive 25% discount. The parts manager is Sean Keller and his email addy is: sean.keller@Lhmauto.com Mention this club or IH8MUD to get the discount and also peruse one of the stickies on our favorite places to get services done, like engine building, radiator, alignment, etc.

I don't know what the current process is with COVID. I think you need to make an appointment. Since you are coming from out of state they will do a VIN inspection. When I moved here 25 years ago I had to attend drunk driving school. It was stupid and based on my age. Nylia didn't need to attend since she was older. I don't think that is a requirement now.

Also, read up on the real-ID crap. You will need to submit a ton of paperwork to get a driver's license.

Yup, just go to MVD.com to get an appt for registration stuff.

Is it possible the snap ring is not a reuseable part? I'm thinking it might stretch getting it off.

I think like all (?) Toyota stub axles the ends are threaded M8x1.25. You would just need one long enough.

When i moved back here 2 years ago it was no problem getting driver license or vehicle rego. Since you are in Bernalillo County, be sure to get your emissions certificate before you go in. Read on the website all the necessary documents and don't forget any when you show up. MVD Express and other DMV contractors are faster and easier if you don't mind the surcharge. At MVD Express I think it is $25/transaction and license and rego are 2 transactions.

Welcome Robert!

I am an 80 guy, so I don’t know about all this snap ring stuff, but I am learning!

FYI - the cheapest place I have found for emissions check is a little self-serve car wash. It’s on Wyoming Blvd, just south of Zuni, almost to the Air Force Base, on the left side of the road (east side) if you’re coming from Zuni. This is south of I-40 about 2+ miles. They charge about $14 including tax. There are emissions check places all over town, but some may charge double that price.

Welcome to NM!

Evan

It appears that I have been failing in my responsibilities as a 100-series owner. I need to read up on this epidemic. I already knew about the brake booster/pump issue and the heater hose T issue.

Kudos to Sean. I paid him a visit today to buy some OEM brake fluid. His price on a 100 series front axle and hub flange suggests all of my OEM parts will be procured through him.

💯

I was there today too picking up some exhaust hardware for my 80 from Sean. They give us a really good price for parts.

I entered the dealership off of the side street, and they had blocked the back route to the service area. They had also blocked the path around front with vehicles, but there was enough space to curb crawl past them. I got some weird looks, but not looks like it hadn't been done before.

I have made my formal entrance now.

Welcome Robert! From your rig photos I can tell that you're two houses down from me... I've got tons of tools and happy to help out while you're couch surfing. PM me and I'll give you my details- then we'll meet up at the driveway for a beer and meet/greet. -Rob

Oh jeez, there went the 'hood

Just wait till I move out there....

Big thanks to @izula for his help today. It's always great to meet more folks in the NM Cruiser family, get to hang out with them, and work on our rigs.
