Coast Guard orders evacuation of Hawaii harbors, closes ports to inbound traffic​

HONOLULU — The Coast Guard Captain of the Port Honolulu has issued an order for evacuation of commercial vessels from all commercial harbors in the Hawaiian Islands due to the estimated arrival of tsunami waves Tuesday at 7:17 p.m.

At the direction of the COTP, all harbors in Hawaii have been closed to incoming vessel traffic. Vessels transiting within the vicinity of the Hawaiian Islands or inbound to ports in Hawaii shall remain offshore until conditions subside.

Any vessel intending to remain in port shall provide a written or oral request for a waiver from the COTP by calling (808) 842-2600 or emailing SecHonoMTSRU@uscg.mil.

The COTP Honolulu will monitor the status of the ports and reopen each port on a case-by-case basis after hazardous conditions have subsided. Vessels shall remain at sea until receiving confirmation that the ports are reopened by the COTP.

Port status information and updates will be provided via VHF-FM channel 16. Vessels and facilities should immediately report any dangerous situations to the Coast Guard Sector Honolulu command center at (808) 842-2600.

The Coast Guard is monitoring the tsunami warning at this time. For more information about the tsunami warning issued for the state of Hawaii, please follow the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centerand National Weather Service.

Yeah, people evacuated to high ground, all flights in and out of the state cancelled last night, and basically it turned out to be a nothing burger. Better safe than sorry...
 
Hope you’re staying high and dry tonight and the tsunami doesn’t affect anyone there. My son in Haleiwa loaded his cars and family and headed for higher ground.

Just the harbor parking lot flooded in front of our house. I was up at higher ground for all of it, but I saw video of the harbor drained 8-10 ft deep with the boats laying on the ground, then water rushed back in. Luckily the flooding stopped about 40 ft from our house, then drained back to the ocean.
 
Nothing like seeing ash falling out of the sky at your house from a forest fire you can see, hearing the roar from the creek/stream/river as the gully washer changes the landscape. I imagine watching the surge tide roll out/in and finally out again is just as emotional.
 
Forest fires and floods suck.
