Woohoo finally got my FJ80, a '97 LX450 w/ lockers and 128k miles. I've been a quietly observing this forum for quite sometime and finally posted b/c I got my rig!
Here are a couple of quick pics, the bug shield has came off since I bought it....

I've visited the newbie FAQ section and the FAQ maintance page before but still had a couple questions in regards to the rig.

I picked the car up from Texas, drove it back to Kansas. Half way up the trip the CEL came on. I hoped it to be the gas cap not on tight enough but when I got home the next day I took the car to Autozone and the PO401 Code showed. Yes the infamous EGR Flow Insuffiencent ordeal. Don't have time to mess with it right now.
My quesiton is does the CEL from the PO401 reduce performance and give me worse gas mileage than usual? I've heard that OBDII cars w/ the CEL retard the timing, and run rich as too be in a "safe zone". Is the true?
I"m asking this because I"m taking my new rig on a roadtrip to California tomorrow for spring break and need to know.

Another thing how many miles per tank does your FJ80 get?
I went 285 miles before the fuel waring light came on, filled up the tank and she only took 21.5 gallons meaning I had 5 gallons yes. Just curious to see if my mileage is normal even w/ the CEL on.

Thanks,
Sadiq

Welcome! :flipoff2:

Don't forget to check out Tornado Alley Cruisers, we could use another 80 :D .

Not sure I can answer your questions, but I'm sure someone will chime in shortly.

You got 13.2 mpg which is in the average mpg range. My fuel light usually comes on with about 4-5 gallons left (21 gallons to fill).

Nice LX dude! I have the same model w/ less miles on it. It sounds like your getting good gas milage. When first had my lx i was getting the same 285 per tank with a fill cap. at 21.5. Now with ARB bumper, bigger tires, and bad O2's i'm getting about 260 or so around town.

Part part of cali will you be in?

Good luck and have fun with the new ride.

Welcome! :flipoff2:

Nice looking rig. Your experience is almost identical to mine -- I bought a '97 with 124.5k on the clock, got halfway home, and the CEL popped on. In my case is was the variable switching valve (VSV.) If you're a DIY kind of person, contact Toyota Materials Distribution and buy your factory service manual, then follow the steps for diagnosing your VSV. IIRC it should have about 30 ohms of resistance -- mine had none.

If you're not a DIY guy, you need a mechanic you can trust to follow the troubleshooting steps in the right order. I used the dealership, but only after another mechanic replaced some other stuff and then gave up and said to take it to the dealer. Live and learn, right? Since finding Mud and getting the FSM I've found greater self-reliance to be A Good Thing.

Oh, and on the mileage, that sounds about right for a long highway trip with the CEL on. I average about 12.5 around town, and can get just over 16 on long trips. My mileage improved by about one mpg when I replaced the VSV.

Congrats on your new truck! :flipoff2:

Thanks for the compliment, I like the new rig a lot.
As far as my Cali trip, I'll be in the bay area staying with a friend in Sunnyvale and then make my way down to LA and SD.

Welcome!
You may want to get the CAC list before you go down for your trip, added peace of mind...

Sadiq,

I had the P0401 for about a year; off and on. There are several threads discussing how to fix the EGR system. Bottom line is that I could not discern a difference in performance or MPG. I cannot say definitively whether or not the ECU retards the timing and enriches the fuel for a P0401 but it might. My truck was not stock and had a lot of changes during the time I was trying to fix the P0401 so there were too many things going with my truck.

I would go on the trip and start doing the DIY diagnosis when you return. If your plans are to have this fixed by a mechanic then go ahead and take it in before your trip for peace of mind.

From one newbie to the next

Hey, I just joined after purchasing a 97' LC in Nov. I am from Missouri and attended Mizzou. We can have a truce since this is neutral site. Good luck in the Tourney. I have you guys going to the sweet 16 in my bracket. Nice rig by the way. I purchased my 97' LC out of TX too.

If your up in getting some IN & Out Hamburgers while in LA look me up.
What's with the gaycode? If you're hungry just go to Dennys.

Tech: fill your tires to about 40 psi, drive with care and you can get around 16 or 16.5 MPG.

Rock Chalk Bitches!

Nice playa! Good choice on the rig. I actually lived in the good ole L town for 6 years. Just moved out here to Denver in August. Im sure you can pull all types of wool in Lawrence with the new ride! Hit me up if you come west. And welcome
