YES YOU CAN GET THESE STARTERS IN THE US... AND CHEAP!

Uhgg! MY starter on my PZJ75 plow truck completely crapped out on me a week or so ago. It snowed, I needed to plow and it would not start. The starter looked like a real PITA to remove, so I tested the entire starter circuit to see what was wrong and found my solenoid to be toast (or as Toyota calls it the "magnetic switch").

After removing the fasteners I could still not get teh starter out. Above it is the steering shaft, below the frame and some brake lines, and it is sandwiched between the fender and the engine. I connived a bit and was unable to find a path to remove it so I cut one. I sawed out my inner finder along a line that will allow me to use a sheet metal band and some rivnuts to replace it. I opened the starter to find it was toasted , the armature was missing a copper bar, the brushed were smoked and the solenoid was cooked.

No one in AU who had starters for under $400.00 shipped outside of AU. I found one in Canada from my friends at 4wheelAuto but they wanted $700+ ($800 with the cost of shipping) This did not fit my wishes or my time frame so I was able to find another solution.

a 1994-1998 (maybe more years) Dodge Cummins starter. Everything is hte same except the starter housing and the pinion gear. The pinion gear CAN wear out but the housing pretty much lasts forever. Shop online and you can find this solution completed for around $150.00.

I paid $300.00 for mine because it was convenient and immediate.
Still $300 < $800

I hope this helps someone else someday. I made the title easily searchable.

side note

OH YEA!!!!

And if it were not obvious, you should have a FSM and you will find the swap out easy as pie.

Did you pull the guts of the Dodge starter and put them in the Toyota starter body?
Any pictures?

Not exactly,

The starter motor and the solenoid are bolted onto the starter housing. simply unbolt them and swap them. The swamping out the pinion gear is the only challenging part, and with a FSM even that only takes a few minutes. Sorry I meant to take some pictures but I got in a hurry and forgot.

Google a 95 dodge starter (shopping results) and a 1HZ starter) you will see how similar that are

I have been told that the nose cone and such is the same as the V6 toyota pick up.
I haven't investigated much further though.

Is the 1HZ and 1PZ starter the same?

hmmm

not sure where you got your pictures from Rosco.

Fine and dandy, but I have had three toyota diesel starters rebuilt for under $75 tax included in Tucson at Luna Rebuilders on Grant Road.

For 12v applications, the 2LT reman starter from Toyota in the US is less than $300 and the diesel starter is same-just swap the gear boxes.

Right, rebuilds are great, Mine was toast, no rebuild options... This is just information, I am sharing it with whom ever finds it helpful or searches for it. Congratulation Rick_d... not sure what point your trying to make, but I am glad you also found an affordable solution.

my point?

NEW Starter Toyota Lift Truck L / 2L Diesel 28100-54070 | eBay

(yes, made in china, but $116.95 and free UPS shipping.)

Toyota part number for 2L starter 28100-54070 and may be upgraded now.
-------------------

$700 is insane for a starter, but Toyota of Canada SCREWS owners on parts except on FJ/BJ40 fenders and 16" OEM steel wheels.

What I am saying is it should not cost that much to put the truck back on road. Rebuilding services can be found nationwide that offer inexpensive services to RnR electric motors. I stated a location and active business that can reman a starter for a stated price (within last 12 months) and also can do either 12 or 24V systems. That said, they cannot be the only shop in the US that works on motors and there may be some that could charge less. I have been into diesel cruisers since 1998, and a participating board member from the mid 1990's well before ih8mud. I have sold new and used Land Cruiser parts worldwide and parted more fj45 wagons than anyone else on earth. I currently run a 1HD-T powered truck and do 99% of all maintenance.

Rick_d. That is good information.
You started your first reply with "fine and dandy, but..." That seems argumentative. I thought I was pretty clear that I also think it should not cost that much to buy these starters when they are basically the same thing as a $150.00 starter that is available right here in the US. The information you shared was a great addition to this thread, but it was not a rebuttal of what i wrote, it was complimentary. I cant not tell if your trying to argue or add information. Regardless, Thanks for the input.

I do want some clarification though. That starter you listed uses the same ring gear as the 1PZ starter?
If so that is one benefit the Cummins starter can not match.

Wanted to bring this thread back. Got a few clicks last time I took my Troopy out and decided it was time for a rebuild. Looked for plunger and contacts at dealer and through a few other channels with no luck. Spoke with Chris at cruiseroutfitters with no luck either. Did some research and found the below, installed tonight and besides having to cut OEM ground connector and runs ring terminal, figment was great, easy install and she turns over promptly. I will order overseas OEM contact and plunger for rebuild on Toyota starter but at this price it was worth the swap. Hope this helps others.

It's not common for Toyota starters to fail that badly. Usually the parts inside fail, and can be affordably replaced with new. Good tip on the Cummins starter as an organ donor. Cummins might rely on Denso for that part, I don't know.

i'll be shopping at my pick-n-pull here for it.

Can anyone shed some light on this? Are there other USA Toyota spec starters that have the same nose cone as the 1HZ?

The Toyota nose cone readily adapts to a Cummins heavy duty starter. That’s the route I took.
