Google is correct, slang for Autozone (where the Vatos shop for auto parts ... )

See if SOR has any left in stock ... They're usually the last ones with anything left 'cuz it'll be full price +. Might also try Mark at Mark's Off Road.

:meh:

Thanks. SOR website shows "no longer available" for new ones. I'll try calling Mark today.

what's it gunna take to rebuild these things?

So I'm having this problem where my 1985 FJ60 (CA smog legal) has a hesitation or miss as I'm driving from about 2000 to 3000 rpm. It is apparent if I am driving at a constant RPM or if I am slowly accelerating. It's not as apparent (or non existent if I am quick accelerating). I can make it stop hesitating if I disconnect the vacuum line to the EGR and plug it.

I recently purchase and installed a new OEM EGR modulator (thanks CDan!), but I still have the problem. I spliced a vacuum gauge into the vacuum line between the modulator and the EGR valve. At non-idle RPM I see vacuum that increases with RPM, and at constant RPM the vacuum needle is steady, even when I'm experiencing the hesitation. This leads me to believe that the EGR valve is getting a steady signal from the modulator.

So what's the next step? should I replace the EGR valve, look at a carb rebuild, or try something else?

Other things I should confess:

I do have an exhaust leak when the engine is cold. However, I don't think it is an intake leak, at least I haven't detected one using carb cleaner.

The engine seems to run fine at constant speed on the freeway. This problem is really only apparent when I'm driving around town on surface streets.

Thanks in advance for the help.

You can pass with a "defunct" EGR (All that EGR does is lower NOx by lowering the combustion temperature by means of partial Exhaust Gas Recirculation

I posted an inquiry to Wells Vehicle Electrics about their part number EGR499 and their response, "Unfortunately the part has been discontinued by all sources." It appears these were manufactured by one company and maybe re-labeled by others.

I put in an online purchase to napa, and I am currently waiting for bad news from them.

Yes, they were all Denso. Dunno if Denso subb'd it.

I see them currently listed for 1985 LC on Rockauto ... $165 Site let me add to shopping cart.

Nope - not me, but somebody bought it. Gone, baby, gone ...

2mbb - I asked Mark for ya... He doesn't have any.

:crybaby:

Thanks.

RockAuto hasn't dropped the EGR totally from their catalog. They let me put it into my cart, but then when I go to check out the quantity/dollar amount goes to zero--the cart empties. So you can't order. I still haven't heard from Napaonline, but I'm not too hopeful since the local store said their warehouse was empty.

edit: the above used to be true. Now they seem to have finally dropped it from the catalog...

on a completely unrelated note, Rockauto shows an "EGR Temperature Sensor", for the FJ60, which technically there is none. But this part looks like the catalytic converter thermosensor--which I though was also NLA (At least from Toyota). It's Standard Motor Products #ETS58

labor day update: I rebuilt my carburetor today. To my surprise, my primary main jet is size 125, not 147 like it's supposed to be. So maybe this is causing a lean stumble. I have a back up carb, and swapped in the primary main jet from that one. I took it around the block and it runs OK, but I'll have to see how it settles in.

Does anybody know where I can get another 147 jet? SOR seems to be out of them.

I need a small primary for my next smog test ... I can swap ya a back up 147 I have for the 125 ...

I just bought it. turns out my EGR is probably 90% inop. Did all of the EGR tests in the manual over the weekend. Tried cleaning it out with intake cleaner with little success.

Steep price, but it is really the only thing in my EGR system that is in bad shape. Everything else seems to be ok.

It's a rebranded Denso (OEM), so with shipping included, not too bad... Post a pic when it shows, please.

Welll...CRAP!

message from that vendor re: the EGR valve:

Message from merchant: We apologize for the error, but this item is not in stock. We have issued an immediate full refund. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Just to add to this thread:

Mark, this is the gauge and units for the Toyota (OTC) smog pump tester, in case anybody wants to try and make one. Just found a used one on fleabay.
