About the Chevy transmissions, they are crap compared to an LC. My tranny (130,000) shifts and feels so much better and smoother than the 99 tahoe I had with 55,000(Shifted horribly and was about to need a rebuild). My dad continues to buy suburbans and says himself they need a rebuilt around 60,000 or 70,000. That is when he sells them :D

Have you ever flat-towed anything before?

The 80 will handle the weight ok. Flat-towing can be spooky and remember stopping can get a bit odd at times. I flat-towed a crew-cab 2wd dodge truck behind a 1 ton 4WD Dodge truck 650 miles a few years ago. My Cummins handled the weight just fine but it got to be a handful to control over about 55mph. In addition the towed vehicle tried to "push" the back end of the towing vehicle while decelerating and turning. That was a spooky feeling.

I suggest you practice a bit first before you go out for real.

Yes, actually quite a bit. I've been flat towing it for almost as long as I've owned it. And I was doing the driving, not my dad, in most cases. I've towed it on tight surface streets, open highway, hilly highway etc. Most any road type found in GA.

I appreciate the concern, but it is not necessary. :)

The 80 is heavier and has better brakes than all of the vehicles I have flat towed it with in the past. (aside from the POS suburban).

I was actually planning on a short test run the night before anyway. :)

Suggestions for Tow Bar Vendor?

Just read this thread and have a similar need. I have a stock 1977 FJ40 in South Carolina and need to get it to Atlanta occasionally so I can play with it. We originally trailered (borowed) it to SC with my son's Ford Expedition (he has since bought a LX 470) and it is about a 6 hour drive - all fairly flat. Driving the 40 to Atlanta would mean one LONG day on two lane roads - I just don't want to do it. I also don't trust the U Haul dollys and the straps won't close over the tires on the 40 anyway.

I have DDs - 1995 T100 and 1997 FZJ 80. The T100 is a 4 cylinder but too weak. Based on your posts about pulling with the 80 I would like to invest in a tow bar to make this run a couple of times a year.

Any recommendations on a good bolt-up tow bar to fit the FJ 40? Thanks.
