Hey OP. That's my truck that phil detailed! He works wonders!

EDIT... I stand corrected. Thats a different LX. Phil also did mine. I highly recommend him.

Great find, My wife went from a 7series BMW to the lx470 (pearl white w/tan) and has not let me get her a new car since, (I should send Lexus a thank you card) just as a base point I just picked up a texas LC 1998 with 305,000 miles and it was kinda maintained (new leather) but then the motor blew (cracked/split radiator was the culprit ) it sat for a year then I got it... zero rust I have not had one bolt to not unbolt as it should... I replaced the engine with a 100k unit went over everything I could think fluids bushings ect...
point being... your 50k truck is an infant with all but zero wear... don't rush your mods live with it and you will figure out what your real needs are to make it fit... I once went from a 930turbo to an F350 diesel so we all adjust....

The 930 is one of my dream cars. Selling my M5 and using this as my daily driver will put me in a position to purchase my first Porsche in a couple of years. I have been a car enthusiast from a very young age and a Turbo has always been at the top of my list. A built 100 and a 997.2 PDK Turbo would be a dream garage. Starting a new job early next year so it is very quickly becoming a possibility!

Congrats on your LX and good taste in vehicles! I have an E39 M5 with 46k miles and it's stablemate is my 2006 LX470 with 83k miles. If I was smart, I would sell one like you did to only have one project car at a time! ;)

Haha I know the struggle man. Two 'project' cars are tough. Its great that you have such low miles on your E39. Enjoy it, it will probably be the best sedan I will ever drive. My leaves tomorrow on the trailer to its new owner :(

Looks just like the '07 I picked up a couple months ago, mine came with 76k miles. I also went with KO2s in the 275/70/18 size and they've been awesome. I had the steps off but put them back on to help out my short and very pregnant wife.

It also looks like you've got a pretty aggressive build schedule. Since the AHC doesn't like extra weight and you plan to add bumpers I wonder if it is worth changing out fluid and addressing your shock if you are headed towards an aftermarket suspension anyway. Fluid isn't that expensive but looking down the road a little could save a few bucks. I don't mean to rain on your parade or anything but just wondered if you had looked at it from this perspective.

I plan to stay stock for the foreseeable future with my bigger tires. It seems like my system is working well enough and I'm a little concerned at being able to dial in an aftermarket suspension like I'd want.

Best of luck to you and your build.

Edit: I'm also interested in how you plan to mount your phone. I haven't been really happy with anything I've seen so far. I've got a Note4 which is a beast and there isn't a great place to put it.

Thanks for the advice. I've heard the 'stay stock' for a little while advice from a few people and coming from a very modded M5 I already have an itch. That said I should do it right and build it to fit my needs rather than just throw parts at it. The more I think about it I might just do tires, drawers, cosmetic and interior mods. That would hold me off for at least a few month, lets see what I decide on. In terms of the phone mount I am using a mount from RAM mounts to hold my Nexus 6 (biggest phone on the market) . They make one specifically for phablets and there isn't any mount available that comes close. Currently I have it up on the windshield but I have an Ipad mount incoming and will try to get the two to work together. The Ipad would be mounted the seat rails (using RAM mount) and the phone's mount would piggyback off of that or would some how be attached to the center console. Again I'll post details when it is put together.

Heres the mount I'm using for the Nexus

Congrats, I would call Slee and get his opinion on your build plan. I dumped the AHC on my 2005 and had Slee do the 2" OME lift with diff drop and Slee sliders. Also went with BFG AT/KOs 275/70/18. Rides like a new vehicle and the 2" lift makes if a different vehicle.

Thanks for the advice. I'm going to give Slee a call this week and try to figure out my options and what will fit my needs best.

Taking an old Lexus to the dealer doesnt make it any newer nor give you the new car experience. Don't get caught up in "now that I own a Lexus, I can go to the Lexus dealer".

Find a much better qualified independent, like Slee, develop a relationship, save a ton of money, and have the confidence your truck is being serviced correctly.

Or continue the pilmigage to the dealer, eat off the floor and roll the dice.

Oh, and get your parts here on Mud.

I'd love to find a good independent mechanic in NJ/PA/NY but dont know anyone who specializes in these trucks. Unlike out west it is much more difficult to find a specialist. Do you have any recommendations? There is OK4WD but they seem to specialize in Jeeps. I would need someone to be able to service my AHC, so far only Lexus will touch it. Not even the toyota dealerships near me want anything to do with it.

I'm a little confused. I see your edit but who is Phil?

Looks like quite the find. What parts are they replacing for the brake job?

Buy some tools,(and a floor jack, axle stands, etc for other repairs). Learn to do the fluid changes yourself. It ain't that hard, you'll save time and $$ and you can use the tools for other things, making the money spent on tools back in no time.

Who has the time to drive to a dealer to get the oil changed? I can do mine in the time it takes to drive to the dealer, 8 miles away. Plus my garage serves cold beer, the dealer doesn't.

Phil is awesome ( owner of Detailers domain) - we swapped RS6 parts back in the day.... I miss that damn car.

Swapping the suspension would be top of my list.... unless you like the function of the ACH I'd ditch that and go with something like the JT kit with Icons' or something similar.... I will say that without weight in the rear or sliders perhaps the current rear spring options aren't optimal ....

if you're inclined to like wide rubber ( as one might coming from the M5 world) a 325 will work....

cheers.

very nice rig man. glad to see there's still a few nice clean trucks out there! hah!

Nice vehicle you got there. God bless Texas.

I just got my 2002 LX back in May with 98k miles, in pretty good shape (less fixing the a/c, replacing the cat-back exhaust, and the fact that it's a Michigan car), but not as nice as yours looks. Good find. In case you feel like modernizing yours, check out my DIY's for backup camera and iPod integration:

http://2ndrodeo.com/2002-lexus-lx-470-ipod-install
http://2ndrodeo.com/2002-lexus-lx-470-backup-camera-install

I also did Bluetooth integration (yes, you can do all three with the factory nav/integrated climate controls) and an aftermarket amp/sub install. I'll have the DIY's for those shortly. Let me know if you have any questions.

This isn't a build thread, it's more of a get your truck up to current maintenance by paying the dealer, and doing deferred maintenance by paying the dealer that the previous owner didn't do thread.

Congrats on the purchase. If you don't want $1k plus repair bills start learning to do some of this stuff yourself.

Also congrats on dumping the M5, now you won't be a target for the person to use as a cut-off for the merge lane.

said before and will say it again, do yourself a favor and have someone like magnacharger.com inspect it and replace or repair any old bearings, or any issues with the unit.

Thanks! I'm doing brakes this weekend myself. Brand new rotors, pads, and repacking the wheel bearings. I got the fluids and cv boots done at the dealer because I just started a new job and time is tight as I learn everything.

Ah yes! Brain fart haha. We'll see how much time I have in the coming weeks and that will determine whether I get DD to do the truck or I can just detail it myself. As for suspension I'd REALLY like to keep AHC. This truck will be a daily driver seeing about two or three offroad/camping/ski trips a month. It rides very well right now and I'd hate to screw it up. On my M5 I had Bilstein PSS9's and it was great on roads near my house (good roads) but any roads in the city were horrid. I found a member on here that has a LX with full bumpers and sliders with AHC. If I can find a way to replicate that in my build I will. Bigger tires will happen but the truck just got new Michelin LTXs about 5k ago. While I'd love to get some 285/65/18 BFG KO2's on there I'm either going to get some wear out of these or sell them.

Thanks for the links man. I actually already have the bluetooth and backup camera in my 2004, it is OEM. I definitely need to be able to play music through bluetooth though so that will be on my list. As for the aftermarket sub and amp that might be a possibility. My subwoofer is blown out slightly so it needs to be glued back together maybe I'll just throw a new one in there.

This is a build thread. Anyone who purchases a used car is going to need to put in work to get it up to a higher standard. Maintenance before modifications...If I choose to have the dealer do some work for me because I don't have the time that is up to me. When I have time the maintenance will be done myself. Maybe I should have dropped 5k+ on armor before I change the oil. And I don't think almost anyone be able to cut off any M5 that was at even half throttle...

We put an Aciv 8000 NEX head unit in our rig, check it out. The 8100 is the newer model but both have Android Auto and Car Play as well as streaming BT and front or back or both view cameras (comes in handy when crawling through the rocks sometimes).

Don't be silly, you don't need $5k of armor either. If you got that quote I suggest you get another.

Keep learning and build up your tool collection!

Brett (former M5 owner)

I agree with almost all of that. Developing a relationship with a great independent shop is so (!) much better than dealing with the dealership. But, talk to that shop first about bringing parts to them. These guys make $$$ on parts. They also buy them cheaper than we can - so it is often a wash. Additionally, lots of shops won't warranty the work or the parts if you brought the parts to them. Just talk to them about it.

Hello,

I'm thinking of buying the 8000NEX. Could you post some photos of your unit installed? I just want to know if it will sit flush in the dash or is it raised? Does the motored face hit anywhere when it lowers to insert the SD card?

Hello

I'll take pics this week. It only protrudes a bit on the lower part where the unit controls are. No hitting anything either.

Thanks for the condescension. I could give zero clucks about owning a Lexus. Always wanted an LC and time is sadly crunched. Knoxvegas is sorely lacking something comparable to Slee or even ACC (Atlanta) to the best of my knowledge. And if you can beat what it costs me on a bloody oil change replete with rental and I am there.

Respect on the AVIC-8000NEX. That (8100/7100/6100NEX) and the Alpine ILX-007 are the double DIN's I am currently debating about adding. In addition to front/rear Focal component speaker sets and most likely a JL Audio 12W7 ProWedge with JL amplification all around. Ran the above in a TL I owned about 10 years ago and desperately miss having that level of SQ.

Christmas in August

100% Japanese Kobe Beefyness on this LX!

I've decided to heed the advice of quite a few members here and start building much slower rather than throw parts at the truck. In a year or so the modifications will not only be more personalized but I'll truly see what I need and not just what I think I need.

That said tire were definitely going to be the first upgrade. I was looking at upsized BFG KO2 or Nitto TG's and found this set on CL. Brand new Terra Grapplers in 285/70/17 with Rock Warriors in great condition.

One of my friend's parents had an LX a few years ago and had Thules largest roof box just sitting in their garage. For $100 I took it home along and I just had to order the key for $2, great score! Also got the stainless steel lines from Slee to improve brake feel while I swapped the fluid.

Just waiting on spacers from Slee to come in so I can get these mounted up.

Sliders and a slew of small and large interior mods are coming next. Ipad with a RAM mount, drawers and some smaller details as well.

Still deciding between White Knuckle, Metal Tech and Slee, but I need to do more research. Feel free to chime in with your decision and reasoning, that would make the decision a bit easier.

Cheers!

Lookin slick! Post a pic when you get the wheels bolted on and the Thule box on please.

My personal preference in 100 Series sliders are Metal Techs...love the kick-out and prefer a "boat-sided" slider over a step slider. I like Dissent Offroad's front bumper and Slee's rear. I'd have them all color-coded white if it were my truck.

Can't go wrong with the three vendors you listed for sliders.

I can live with or without the kickout. No kids right now and people rarely sit it the back. That said they do look good. From looking at mud it seems like everyone loves the metal tech sliders so I'll probably lean towards those. Could you explain what you mean by boat sided slider? If you mean that you prefer a tube shape over the step shape then I absolutely agree.

First off. I like your build thread. Very well thought out. I went from a modifed e92 M3 to a LC due to needing a reliable vehicle to start my marriage and business with. LC/LX fit the bill.

Second, your freaking wheels are so shiney.... I wish mine weren't so old and dull. Cant wait to see them mounted.

As for the sliders... I really like every option slider. But the Slee is going to get my money when the time comes because I have a dog. I keep thinking what would happen to my poor pooch if she slipped her foot between the bars and fell out of the truck. Ew... just the thought of it makes my eyes water. Slee has no such issues. They have a plate over the top and you can slip and get stuck. Just a thought. Kid friendly future or dog friendly present. I think it's important to consider things outside ourselves and our wives.

For sliders I went with bump it off-road step sliders. I love them.
