Wow. I'm glad my diff didn't look like that!

excellent photo documentation, and most helpful as a reminder to get the extra small part...
Neat!
thx

Looks like a wild weekend!

Did you take any pics of the birfield unassembled? Curious at the wear pattern @195K in that environment?
Did you guys replace the diff / carrier bearings? - should be done on your next service...
Replaced that spindle as your next priority

Nice job all the way around guys!

I didn't remove my differential, just did a couple of drain fill cycles. Hopefully that's okay. I'm getting 17 mpg highway and 15 mpg mixed, so maybe it's cleaned out pretty good.

Hey Eric
you knock the ABS ring off, so you can sell it to some of us who can always use a extra :D

Wow, what an experience and slideshow of the process. Wish I'd been there to learn how to do all that. Glad everything worked out for you. :D

A tip of the hat to Rick and Dan.

Eric, I hope you realize how blessed you are to know guys like them. Very few people would go to those lengths to extend a helping hand to a virtual friend.

Hmmm.... my birfs ALWAYS look like that... even w/ new oil seals... oh... wait... I only see them AFTER I break them. Nevermind. Nice job!

OT:

This is gonna sound like a newbie question, but how bad is it for grease to contaminate the diff oil, and vice versa?

J

J,

I believe a 'little' ( definition ? ) is inevitable. Eric's were pretty extreme and could cause damage. I would think grease in the diff doesn't dissipate heat very well and wear on the R&P gears is probably worse than normal. Diff oil mixed with grease in the birfs is messy and leaks out the seals but I don't think there would be extreme wear as long as there is adaquate lubrication in there; letting the knuckle go dry is bad.

Thanks! That's what I figured... I usually have some diff oil in my birfs (soup) but I rarely find any (large) amounts of grease in my diff...

:D you're right, Joe -- diff bearing should have been done -- that'll be next time -- spent some time at the dealer today getting the spindle-stuff -- would have done it through dan, but he's on vacation this week and I need my 80 for the weekend --

:)

I agree 100% with you, B -- I wouldn't find it anywhere else -- it's enjoyable stuff, doing truck stuff, but finding the time is the hard part --

:)

Eric.......Now that you learned how to do (and NOT do) it, you can come back down here and do mine for me!

Eric,
You notice who the smart one was? The one who gets free rides and lays under shade trees... Thanks for the slideshow, wish I could been there to learn something or two.

The benefits of the job -- 1 mpg better, a system that works, tighter steering, fun memories, a new respect for my truck, and confidence to dig into it myself next time!

Looks like you got a nice set of Tatas as well.

how in the heck did that much grease get into the diff?!?

did someone pump grease into the diff? Or is this the result of years of refilling the birf cavity?

Amazing!!!

great pics and congrats on the job well done! :bounce:
