Easy there guys, what kind of board is this! :)

Kudos to you.

In my view, not that my view matters much, there is no better way to thank someone, who has shown you how to do something, than to help and show someone else. Good job.

FWIW, those pics from Ricks, along with a write up of what steps ya'll took in detail would go a long way to helping others if written up as a faq in servicing and inspecting. Would be a lot of work though.

Sounds good -- I just got my parts from the dealer over lunch (and saw TLCgrappler there again, oddly enough -- dealer ordered him the wrong plugs) -- the spindle is a beauty -- with its needle bearings and all --

-- anyway, I'll be replacing all my week-old gaskets and seals this weekend along with the spindle -- I'll write-up a draft of stuff, have Rick correct it (haha) and then we'll see how it fits in to the birf FAQ --

C-Dan goes to the airport to ship some emergency parts for you on a Saturday evening before his vacation and then you buy the $$$ spindle and the rest of the parts from another dealer?

I guess it's none of my business but am I missing something?

he's on vacation this week and I can't use my truck without bouncing the axle-shaft around in that bad spindle -- he's told me before to order emergency parts from my dealer -- through dan, i'd be looking at getting it two weeks from now --

-- I heart C-Dan, honestly, I do -- when I did my huge alternator/PS line/radiator job, I got all the parts from him -- shipped from NM, flawlessly, of course --

It was my opinion that the blown out bushing is what lead to all the issues on that side of the axle. The bushing would allow the birf to wobble around which would stress the splined shaft at the flange, which is what we saw with severly worn splines on the birf and flange. I also think that it was responsible for the clip on that side not coming off without breaking. I recommended that Eric drive it as little as possible until the flange could be replaced.

But it does raise a question, do we have to deal with Dan directly? I've always talked to him or waited until I got him on the phone. Does the rest of his staff recognize us here on the mud and provide the same pricing?

Lastly, all the damage in there could have easily been avoided with routine service. The bushing was ran dry and worn out which led to the spline damage of the birf and flange. The grooves on the axles was from old hard seals riding on them. If the axle was seviced regularly but nothing more than the oil seals and the bushings cleaned and lubed about $1000.00 in parts and shipping costs could have been avoided. Remember there was never a hint of a click from this truck which most wait for before venturing in for the service.

Routine service is right -- I bought the truck at 173K with no prior service except some monkey hitting the brass-caps with a hammer and deforming their fit -- its birfs will be checked regularly from now on --

Quick question about the inner axles: in slide 21 you mention that "careful inspection of the axle diameter reveals we're relatively screwed -- we need new inner axles --" what, exactly, failed the inspection? Is is the groove, or did you mic the OD and determine it's out of spec? My axles have grooves in them where the inner axle seal rides, look like the one in the picture... they're supposed to have grooves, right?

I am not yet on vacation. I was working on my boat Saturday in preparation for vacation, which is next week. Oh, I stock the spindles.

To Rick:

Yes, my people know about the mudders and they know that I get very fawking pissed if they do not pick up the ball and run with it......

No worries here.

I hope you were able to get a fair price. I do not EXPECT board members to patronize my dealership. I am here to entertain myself and to, hopefully, enlighten others. I do enjoy helping members and I will continue to do so. One thing that I try to overcome is the "sharks" out there that inflate the selling prices of replacement parts. In addition, I pride myself on knowing WTF you guys are looking for and I consider it challenging to find the "unfindable"......... D-

cool -- you are the parts-expert, that's for sure --

-- i got the spindle, with needle bearing in it, for $168 --the list price says $292, hopefully that's true -- ;)

negative on the grooves! That should be one smooth surface. I've never read of any spec on what's exceptable but it looked to me to be almost 1mm deep. I'd have to beleive that was too much.

thanks Rick- so then I take it a new inner axle doesn't have any groove in it at all? Mine aren't 1mm deep, but half of that for sure... what's a new inner axle cost, anyway? And if it's not too much of a hijack, anyone have experience "sleeving" an axle? Is that a viable alternative to replacing the things? damn, just when I thought my front end was good to go for a while... :censor:

Just to give you an idea.

Nakman,

I believe some machine shops can "Speedi-sleeve" the shoulder of the axle.

Eric,

Sorry to disappoint you, but those are yours!
