This will be my first trip through the smog station with a pre-OBDII vehicle. What am I in for?

Make sure you tell them its fulltime four wheel drive so they dont try and put you on the roller. Sad to say I had to discuss this issue with them once.

having the engine nicely warmed up helps

They like to fail gas caps

Yup. Failed my first one this year. New cap fixed it. I noticed that there is a small breather/flapper valve in the top of the cap. Wonder if cleaning that out would fix the problem. John

I forgot to do this once and while I had my head down writing my check it got ugly.

Thanks for all the info. Mud never lets me down!

I also agree to tell them the truck is full time 4WD. I thought once they input the VIN it would tell them the type of test to run, I was either wrong or they did not notice. As soon as I saw the reverse lights flash I knew there was trouble. I came out yelling to stop but it was too late. The truck jumped off the rollers and hit the big fan they put in front for cooling. The guy jumped out and yelled at me for leaving it in 4WD. I told him it's full time 4WD and he yelled back "You need to tell us if you modify your truck". I pointed to the big chrome badge on the back that says Full Time 4WD and said it's factory. The manager came over and asked me what the problem was and I told him his guy just drove off the rollers. The emissions guy still insisted it was my fault for putting the truck in 4WD. The manager got another guy to run the test and I was on my way, but their cooling fan was smashed pretty good.

I did a valve adjustment over the weekend and took it through today. It passed without a hitch! Thanks again!

All's well that ends well!
