OK, I go outside this morning to start my 60 to move it around and start loading camping gear and I got nothin. . .

So instead of loading up my 60 for a weekend of fun, I started diagnosing my electrical system this morning before work.

When I turn the key on, the radio comes on and the buzzer alarm works but nothing else. No headlights, turn signals, dome light, or anything. I threw the jumper cables on for 5 minutes and tried starting it without any luck. The alt is good and the batt is good.

So with my lame and vague description does anything jump out to anyone? I am just stuck at work now with no way of testing anything until 5:00 tonight. What usually goes wrong in the starting circuit?

Thanks,

Dylan

Fusible links OK?

Fuses OK?

Battery?---I'd start here and maybe swap in a known good one and look at the fusible links at the same time.

You can beat this, you don't want to miss Fordyce.

Check your fuseable link. Thats what it was for me when I had a very similar situation.

my thought too...

If you aren't getting a noise from the starter, check connections to starter and/or give it a nice whack with a BFH and check battery ground

Whoops, didn't read completely....No headlights etc. (gotta go with fusible link, Bob)

Clean battery posts and cable ends well, tighten, try to rejump battery after letting charge from other car at least 5 min. This costs nothing and might work.Jumping will not work if the battery or contacts are loose or dirty.

Cool guys thanks for the tips.

the battery cables are all 2/0 and battery terminals are military specs and tight. I need to crawl under it and check the starter lug. Something is clicking (other than the fuel cut on the Carb) when the key is on. I'll check on a fusible link since I don't have one on hand (idiot!).

keep thinking

I have a spare 60 fusible link if you are still down here in town. You can call me on my cell if it's needed.

I agree with the fusible link, and voltmeter isn't always necessary for testing them - when they blow, they get very stretchy and can be stretched out lengthwise, as the only thing holding it together is the rubbery insulation. You might not be able to get the correct one easily, but your shop should sell repair kits like I used on the *cough* matador (don't ask) and my stepfather's former 81 lolux. Couldn't find a metric one the same color, but they are rated by both color and size. IIRC, there was an eyelet on one end, and you crimped the other to what was left of the good fuse link. On a 4x4 that I took offroad, I'd try to get the factory part, then keep the mickeymouse wire in the glovebox just in case. Sometimes fuse links fail due to age, sometimes they fail due to overdraw, so don't be too surprised if you get to do the repair twice. The lolux's failed due to age, the matador's failed because some idiot did something stupid (again, don't ask). I have a bunch of fusible link wire at the house, unfortunately I am headed to shaver lake (well, red lake) straight from work today. :steer:

Clicking on the starter sounds like a solenoid, but I can't remember if the 2F has the solenoid on the starter like a chevy or on the fenderwell like a ford. The solenoid on the F-350 would occasionally eff up requiring a whack with something rigid (like a socket wrench) to unstick it. One of these days I should fix that, but I'm not in a hurry to drive something that gets 7 mpg.

The fact that you don't have lights as well points more towards the fusible link, though I suppose it is technically possible for you to have a problem with the starter, the light control/turn signal lever, and the dome light all at once. When my turn signal stalk started giving me fits, I'd lose everything, but generally not with the vehicle having been parked for a while.
