i've always started dis-assembly from the top down... i'll be interested to see how it goes the other way around!
Well my plan is to drop the suspension and axles, pull the motor, transmission, and transfer case, then the front clip, and finally the body tub. Going to sand and bed line the frame, axles, underside of body, floorboard, and engine bay.
 
Not going to discourage you in any way but this crew can help with any questions you have about doing some of the work. Don't get it torn down and lose interest because you get discouraged. I would get the truck running and driving well before I tore into suspension work. Just my .02. Have you ever done a spring over? There is more to it than just putting the springs on top of the axle. Please ask us questions if you have them. Also, the guy that posted a few post ago (orangefj45) is preaching the gospel. He is our "go to guy" when we are stuck at times.

antFJ is a good source for full resto questions. Look at his post on his resto. Beautifully restord rig!

Oh no you can't discourage me, this is why I joined this forum for help. I really appreciate any help or criticism given. I have never done an SOA but I have seen and read what all it consists of. The reason I'm dropping the axles right now is to rebuild them completely and paint them, not to prepare for an SOA right now. This FJ has been sitting in a barn for 20 years with no head or oil pan on the engine. The entire vehicle is covered in surface rust. My reason for stripping it to the frame instead of getting it running first is because if I get it running now, I will be fixing problems as they happen AND I will never want to strip it down and sand and paint the frame or body tub like I want. I would rather take my time and restore it so when I do start daily driving it I will basically have a brand new vehicle
 
And also my reason for taking my time and restoring it piece by piece is hopefully in the next year or two I will be able to afford to build my dream rig and use everything to build a 4 door FJ as I talked about towards the beginning of this thread.
 
yes - please hit me up - I'm working on a 71 right now myself and i'd be glad to help. wish i was closer... i love tear downs. Putting brand new stuff back together is even better! I have found that a full resto tends to take the most amount of time when you are waiting for money for parts, paint, sandblasting etc.

best way to stay focused is to get something cleaned up and painted fairly quickly - like the frame and axles. You will feel like you are making progress and are more likely to keep moving with the project
 
Ok the FJ is looking better and better the more we fool with it, there is hardly any slack in the steering or in the front and rear driveshafts when rotating the hubs. The stock 3 speed on the column shifts in and out of gear with no problem. I'm considering finding a replacement F engine for it or a 2F engine.

2F is a better plan than a 350 (in my opinion) - the closer you stay to stock the better the rig will hold value
 
Thanks wngrog. I messaged him. I'm thinking about starting a completely new build thread. This one has too many what ifs. I have done a lot of research on top of seeing just how good of shape my FJ40 is in and I know exactly what I want to do and I think a new thread would be a good idea
 
The FJ60 motor Cam has would be the cats ass in that rig! Good reliable motor. I'd jump on it if I needed one.
