Hey Guys,

I have been using the Mudrak Dual seal on my transfercase with great success. Unfortunately I damamged the seals and need to replace them. Does anyone know a part number and source I might be able to pick them up locally?

I talked to Gary and he sells them but we have been playing phone tag for a couple of weeks now. I would love to get it done ASAP.

As always, any help is greatly appreciated.

I think, but I might be wrong, that pinion seals are the same part number. Put in a call to your local toyota dealer to confirm.

Not even close to the same seal...

It is my understanding that Gary modifies the housings for two specific seals.

Since he is the one that modified your seal housing, I would get the parts from him.

I have not ever used one of his housings, and do not know the seal numbers that he uses.

Perhaps focusing on providing accurate information should be your new game...

I'll certainly do my best to follow your lead.....just not the "helpful reply" you gave above. :)

Seriously....I have a Mudrak dual speedo thing and am pretty damn sure it is just two of the same oil seals, stacked. In fact someone on the board replicated the housing modification with a dremel.

You're thinking of the front output seal.

The dual seal mod does use two stock seals.

Phil

2 stock seals. I understand his trick simply removes the rib in the casting where the single seal presses up against limiting its insertion depth.

Not to take anything away from the guy...brilliant idea really...but one can do this simple mod with a die grinder in less time that it takes to find a box to ship it out in. No wait, no expense, immediate gratification.

Didn't the guy that tried it with a special bit he got off of ebay end up with just as many leaks as before he "fixed it".

Maybe I'm wrong...

I don't know what you are talking about. There certainly is no worldwide shortage of idiots and Ebay at times appears to offer a disproportional concentration.

Anyone with a die grinder, a compressor, a small cylindrical abrasive bit and a little common sense can do this them self. Grind, check, grind possibly a little more, check, clean, press in 2 seals, re-install and be done with it.

The hardest part, and where most fail at successfully stopping this leak long term, is shimming the output bearing correctly.

I think the seals in the Mudrak housing are thinner than the standard seal. I'd just go to a local bearing supply place and see what they can do.

Here in Guatemala I just take the part I need in to a bearing house or whatever and they measure it up.

Noah(1973Guppie) did a writeup on it, and I dont think youre going to knock it out effectively with a die grinder. A: its a big lip and would take a long time to get it perfectly round. B: I cant imagine it can be done accurately with a hand held die grinder in the first place. any little ding/too deep a notch and the seal isnt going to seat accurately.

most of the "leaks" are related to output shimming/grooves in the drum/and leaking past the speedo drive shaft/and leaking past the splines on the PB drum and not the seal itself. Double seals might help with the groove in the drum, but not with any of the other problems. Correct those first(they are easier than grinding for a double seal.

I did mine (thanks to poser)and used two stock seals.... (on a lathe)

If all gary is doing, is getting rid of the lip that stops the seals from going in farther...... then he's using stock seals.. unless he found some slimmer ones..

At least it was factual:

Instead of filled with inaccurate and misleading statements:

Wonderful.

What are the seal numbers? People that I have spoke to in the past about this very issue state that they are not OEM pieces, but rather, a different thickness seal, and that apparently there is a step in the housing preventing you from installing two of the OEM seals.

When I install the modified seal housings that I have machined out for me, I use two stock seals, 90311-45001. They are not a special thickness seal; they are a stock component that anyone can get from their Toyota dealer.

Here are some pictures of the Mudrak double seal. It was years ago when I installed this but I seem to remember the seals looking exactly like the stock one but I did not measure anything. No leaks in 5 years.
