Mudflaps 'over' sliders ..

Not even sure this is worthy of tech .. But as usual at around 3AM, I got bored so this time I went down to the parking garage to finally tackle the mudflaps. I had been delaying it because I really wanted to make a cutout so I could fit the flaps 'over' the ends of the Slee sliders. I wasn't sure if guys were cutting their flaps in a sideways 'U' to accomodate the slider ends, but I wanted to try and slip mine over instead.

I used the one bolt hole on the upper outer edge of the flaps as my reference point, and used that to develop a cardboard template. Took out the box cutter and went to town. This is what happened ..

Not too bad. I cut out mine as well. Mine extended outwards so I had to make the "U".

The standard alloy side steps on Aussie GXLs have the mudflaps go over the the steps like that. After my OEM steps were totalled by the waterfall ledge in Cruiser Canyon, LCMP I made a temporary set of steel sliders using what was left of the original brackets. I ran these temporary sliders in the factory cutout of the mudflaps. All was fine until a trip to Manar Park last Easter. While attempting to do the "creek run" the 80's wet tyres slipped on the rocks and dropped the weight of the car on a large rock. This bent the brackets and pushed the sliders outwards. The mudflaps were pushed out and because they are attached to the flares the mounts for the flares broke. The flares are still on the 80 just a bit loose at the bottom.
I'm your sliders are a lot stronger than my POS steps but it might pay to leave a gap of a 1/4" or so around your sliders just in case they move.

I'm your sliders are a lot stronger than my POS steps but it might pay to leave a gap of a 1/4" or so around your sliders just in case they move.

That's a good observation. It seems to me that the sliders are going to flex upward for the most part, though, so you might get away with only gapping the top. Gotta keep that clean look after all.

Come late spring I'll doll her up with a good waxing, and re-undercoat it. Gotsta look sexy next to all them 'lil Toureqs drivin around these parts .

As far as flexing on rock?? Like thats ev...*ahem*. I mean when I hit the trail head I'll (naturally) be in the habit of removing all the flaps!

I tried something different based on the running boards front trim pieces since these can be had for free or cheap here vs the expensive front mudflaps.

Wanted something high so no interference with rocks, but without the mudflap it looks unfinished.. I took the original RB trim piece and just cut stuff off them until only the flare cap remained, but I left a front flap of sorts. I may cut that flap off later on and just keep the flare "cap". That will look good but won't offer any protection. For that matter, the current flap is very short so it doesn't protect the door much anyway. I may also see if I can add a flexible longer flap that would be easy to remove on the trail.

I did the same thing with the mudflaps on mine when I built the sliders. The top of the sliders have the oem Toyota plastic step cover. Has anyone come up with any quick release ideas for removing the mudflaps for wheeling? It would be nice to have a quicker way to remove them other than the standard socket/wrench method.

Sorry to hijack the thread but sweet 80 82cruiser. Love those rims and hub caps. Not to mention the old school badges. Those cool reversing lights tucked out of the way in the sweet rear bumper.
