I have a JD2 #3 bender mounted on a large metal bench and want to mound it on its own stand. While I am at it I'd like to build a hydraulic ram for it.
As was discussed in this thread the weight of the steel hanging off the end of the bender is a problem. To resolve this issue I am thinking of mounting the bender vertically...typically it is installed horizontally. Instead of having platforms holding the steel I could hold an angle finder to the steel to keep it level.
Has anyone does this? Does anyone have pictures?

wouldn't mounting it vertically get restrictive? the distance to the ground/ceiling becomes a limit to what you can do with it.

I have used a manual bender, seams that as soon as you put pressure on it the tube usually does not rotate out of plane, this one was mounted on a simple base made of 2x6 box steel, you drug it out into the driveway and parked a vehicle on the leg to secure it.

I always have supports and a level handy when I bend long pieces. The weight of the steel has an effect on the bend.
My thought was to put the bender on a cart with locking casters so if I had a long piece I could wheel the cart outside, like you did when you did your bending. In your case I'd think the car would get in the way...how long are the feet on the stand?

A picture of one mounted vertically.

I have my JD2 bender mounted to a piece of plate, welded to a 4.5 inch dia pipe to a plate on the floor. It's bolted to the middle of the floor. I unbolt it when not in use.

It's a manual so it kinda needs to be mounted horizontal. Otherwise it'd be a bitch to pull on the bar.
