are not impossible.. just complicated .. then need to choose a god pump to fit in no much space .. something with remote reservoir .

Slickrock, have you decided on a mounting point yet? I have been pondering mine for a bit and it looks like the cylinder end will fit at the edge of the diff cover with the shaft end on the end of the driver side tie rod. I still need to check for steering clearance w/FJ60 PS.

That looks like a PIA!, what is up top?

IP / disel filter and in the other side it's my AC compresor and under it my alt with vacc pump ..

i mounted my ram to the driver side knuckle instead of to the pumpkin cause i have a d60 and didn't want to weld the ram mount to the diff cover. true this way can bend the tierod but the bend risk can be minimized with a beefy tierod. im using a 1/4" wall tierod.

it did bend however at cruise moab after i smacked a large rock (rusty nail trail). but it is still functional and the the increased toe in helps my truck track better

Disclaimer: Apparently I don't know anything and my steering setup works very well just due to dumb luck, so read the following with a grain of salt:  /disclaimer

'87 FJ60 arms and FJ62 arms are significantly beefier than the earlier large pattern arms, which accounts for the difference in the picture above, assuming they are both large pattern arms.

I switched from '79 FJ40 arms to '88FJ62 arms when I installed 1-ton TRE's to go with my FJ60 PS setup. The earlier, smaller arms simply do not have enough meat to fit the GM 1-ton TRE's.

Since then, I added hydro assist, mounted to the tie rod with a clamp, and it all has held up great for a few wheeling trips and several hundred road miles running 37" Irocks on beadlocks w/ front locker. (read: lots of load on steering components)

Just ask if you want a picture of my ram mounting. It was a quick job as my front axle housing is trashed and coming out soon, but it also has worked well. (Probably dumb luck again.)

Now that it is already bent, it will fail eventually..

1/4" wall TR is not that thick at all..

The arms in the picture are small pattern '76 FJ40 compared to 60/62 arms.

As far as mounting I have heard the problems associated with mounting to the diff cover. The end of the ram sits far enough away that I should be able to mount it to the axle housing and outside the edge of the diff cover. The ram is only 6.75" though.

Def. post up some pics!

Not all 60/62 arms are created equal. 87-later are much beefier. This is what I was getting at above.

I didn't realize mounting a hydro assist ram without hysteer was such an issue. I just held the ram up as parallel to the tie rod as possible and made some crap to work with my housing that is on it's deathbed.

Turns out I don't have any good pictures and I didn't have my camera with me today. I will be by the cruiser tomorrow after work and take a few good ones. Each of these crappy phone pictures below I shot awhile back of something else but they vaguely show each end of the ram mounting.

My ram came with a pair of simple tabs for each end of the ram. For the axle end I welded a scab plate over the top half of the diff cover and welded the tabs to that. For the tie rod end I welded the tabs to a tube clamp I made out of some solid steel stock I had laying around.

I got side tracked with finiishing up my rear tire carrier and bought an FJ Cruiser so my 40 is a bit lonely right now. I was planning on next week to get started. Looks like your on the right track.

I'll get it done, but it is starting to look like a summe project while I am off for 2 months. Lots of time then.

Have you ripped the metal apart on your stock front cover yet or is your scab plate actually welded to the housing itself? I think an 8" steel pipe cap you hold it.

I have seen two front dif covers with the metal torn due to hydro assist rams being welded to them. I can take a picture of mine if you want.

Yeah, I started the fornt SOA and will be working in High Steer arms. I think the best way to do it will be either to build a solid mounting surface on the pinion housing and runing to TR (second option) or what I like is to mount on the driver side of the axle and over towards the passenger side of the TR. I can make a pretty solid mount on the axle for the base and this will give me a nice straight line to follow the TR so I don't get any bending or strange pushing.

All work is on hold to AUGust first. I will be enjoying my place in Canada. Plus it is so damn hot know that I can't bring myself out into the garage at 110 degrees and start welding and using a tourch.

Maybe I'll have you come by when my steering and SOA is set up and we can talk about what you did and how I can go forward. better yet, I'll throw it on a trailer and you can help me Cut and turn :)
