(40 series rigs) I will be installing two hydro assists on two SUA rigs in the next month. Neither is hy-steer so mounting one end of the ram on top of the 3rd would put the ram at a steep angle to the tie rod.

After market steering stabilizers mount one end on the wheel stop and on the tie rod. I was thinking that I could box and fortify the area around the U shaped turn stop to be the axle mount for the ram. I would make some type of square box out of ¼ flat stock with gussets on the horizontal and vertical of the axle. This would keep the ram parallel to the tie rod and take the pressure of any angles out of the equations.

What are your thoughts on this?

If it were me I would upgrade to the hi-steer arms and not look back. if you have at least 3 inches of lift it will not be a problem. I have seen the hi-steer on a 2 inch lift with bumpstops lengthened in the past.
I do not thing you should put the stock arms under that stress and I also think getting the proper angle and geometry will be much more difficult.

agreed....stock steering arms aren't that strong and the stock tie rod is weenie....

beef to a decent hi-steer system and a good tie rod....or expect issues

'maybe' talk with one of the histeer manufs and see if they'll reverse the taper so the tie rod is below...would take some measuring to ensure it works, but might be an option...or do weld-in histeer tapers for the tie rod, offering the owner the option to change in the future...

Thanks for the info guys. I'll look into it.

Would the 60 arms/knuckles hold up any better?

Brian Ellinger has had good luck with his stock mini truck low steer arms. I think he bent one, but did that when hitting a tree at like 30mph. And imo his setup is rad, lots of up travel available with the low steer. I would never put hydro assist on small pattern knuckles however.

If you mount the ram to the missle of the Tie rod, you will bend the tie rod.

Mount the ram end on one end fo the tie rod and the axle end in the middle ish of the axle.

did you have a pic how it's yours installed . . ?

On my Dana 60??? :D

the arms are effectively identical, so no....

The difference between my 76 FJ40 knuckle and my 60 steering arm/knuckle was a bit stouter, albiet prolly nothing compared to the forces from hydro assist. Not a whole lot of options for SUA w/S/R when compared to hy-steer. Hopefully it will hold up for awhile.

good pic, i was not aware that the 60 stuff was so much beefier :)

Interesting..

Those are beefier than I remember as well..

I'll be mounting a 1.5" ram on Bob one of these days as well.

Spring under and stock arms..

Good or bad, I'll find out :D
