I'm looking at getting some 315/75/16 BFG K02s, a guy in town is selling a set of 5 with 80% tread and wheels for $825 and it seems like something I can't pass up. I've heard that they'll be fine on FZJ80s without a lift, is that typically the case? Will I have to do any extra work besides considering a lift?

I don't want to pass up on the deal but can't exactly afford wheels+lift right now. Currently running 265/70/16 Sumitomo Encounters.

If you are on stock suspension then 315's are never going to fit with enough room for normal driving. 315's work well with a 3" lift. Might be ok with a 2" lift but i doubt it.

Sounds trickie

Go and see if the seller will let you put one side on to test fit... I sure as heck would like to see a photo. It wont work off road, or for a speed bump but it may work for the mall. (If it ever re-opens)

*edit* retracting my comment, based off @MoJ post below.

It’ll be fine for street driving. I mounted BFG KO2 315/75/16 on an original stock suspension for a few months while figuring out which lift I wanted. It was tough to get them to rub during everyday driving. I can recall a slight rub in the rear when backing up into a small ditch. Even then it was a harmless rub. They’re less than 34” when mounted.

2” works fine

They won't fit without a 2" lift at minimum. Even with a 2" they will still rub if you use them off-road.

Buy them and set them aside until you can get a lift. There are plenty of 2" lift options under $1000.00

Check out ironmans kits.

Another option would be a cheap 1" body lift and or coil spacers to clear the tires until you can get new suspension.

So I just ran mine hard last weekend.

861/862 coils which is not supposed to be 2” but I got 22” from hub to fender.

I rubbed once all weekend. Hit a 1-2ft whoop at 40+mph and front came up into the flare slightly. Although I could not find where it rubbed.

315’s with the smallest lift you can buy, its a non issue.

Cheers

All that and happier driveline angles

Yup, zero vibes for me all they way up to 93mph which is the fastest I have had it. 🤷🏼‍♂️

Yes it can be done, yes you can keep your flares! Stock suspension and true 35s went thru the same washout all the Tacoma's did.. daily driving was no issue at all.

I’ll just also point out, the reason why there is conflicting advise is it depends what height the “stock suspension” is sitting at. If you put in brand new stock height springs, it would probably work pretty well. However on the actual stock (25 year old) springs which will have sagged considerably, then probably not.

I know on the last landcruiser I purchase there was less than 10mm between the bump stop and axle when sitting stationary on flat ground. Any sort of bump would be riding on bump stops, so I would have struggled with 33s...

This. Mine smacks the bump stops crawling the Lowe's parking lot speed bumps with just my tool boxes and a few small odds and ends in the back.

If you are riding around on stock springs and the bump stops why don't you just change them?

You are about $400 in coils be it OEM or lifted. This is not a big expense on a Cruiser especially considering the improvement for the dollars spent.

Well I guess it all depends on the tire brand, suspension, driving habits, wheel offset, and vehicle. I am just finishing up a 4 day trip with 300+ miles of dirt. My rig has an ironman 2" lift with 30mm spring spacers in the front. I only rub in the same type of scenario you mentioned but I probably rubbed the top of my fenders about 10 times on this trip. But I am running nitto trail grappler mt's and they are definitely a little taller than other tires in the 315/75/16 size. New mounted my nittos were 34 & 5/8. Compared to my previous toyo rt's in the same size that measured 33 & 1/2 mounted new.

Either way a 2" lift at minimum is needed to run 315's.

Could you cook an 18" pizza on a 16" pizza pan? Sure, but it's going to make a giant mess in your oven....

At least I didn't rub driving on to the ferry.
