I bought an engine out of an '87 FJ60 as a spare engine for my '78 FJ40. I noticed that the motor mounts are larger than the ones in my '78. Are the larger motor mounts the ones I should use and are there any issues with installing them on my '78 frame. I plan on using the right and left motor mount brackets (so I can mount the A/C compressor). Are there any issues with using the '87 motor mount brackets on a '78 FJ40 frame. Can someone explain why Toyota went to the larger style of motor mounts in both the 40 and 60 series with the 2F in 8/80.

i have an 86 fj60 motor going in my 40. the guy i bought it from had it in his 40. i think he said the bellhousing needs to be tapped to utilize the rear mount and the fronts i think he said just use 40 mounts and it will work. i won't know for a few weeks until i can get my frame back to make it a rolling chassis

Just to be on the safe side, double check your radiator shroud to fan clearance and adjust as needed.

I can't think of any issues with the front motor mounts, the bigger/stronger, the better. The rear Tranny/T.C. cushions are a different issue. In 1985 Toyota rotated the tranny clockwise from 12 o-clock to 1 o-clock, and the rear cushion accordingly. I don't think you have any issue here though since you are probably only talking about front mounts.
