OK, I read the threads, tell me if I am right...
To check the motor mounts I have someone rev the engine while I lay underneath to see if the mounts hold the motor down. Hmmm, Seems a tad dangerous, don't you think? Another way, I think, is to place a sturdy board under the oilpan with a floor jack under the board. Jack it up and see if the engine lifts from the mounts. Hmmm, would the weight of the engine crush the oil pan? What if the engine mounts are good, will the weight of the front of the truck crush the pan?
I am replacing my waterpump and and hoses and want to make sure the e mounts are in good shape.

I use a bottle jack. I got some pipe fittings that fit over the top of the piston that allows me to reach the exposed bottom side of the engine block by the oil pan. I lift the engine just enough to see if the mount is broken. You might be able to do a similar thing with a floor jack

A hoist works as well...
You should be able to jack from the oil pan just fine, but if you crumple the pan its all your fault! It seems to be the last part to rust out on these rigs!

I've used a floor jack on the oil pan. Really obvious if the motor mount is broken.

i was thinking about using my winch and a snatch block to pull the motor up to check the mounts? any thoughts?

I just have some one look while I hold the brake, and give it some gas....If the motor trys jumping thru the hood. Its broke.

I'm going to give the floor jack and pan a shot.
Thanks for the tips, I'll let you all know how it works out.

x2 on the brake and gas. Put on the em brake, block something infront of the wheels and try and move forward. If the mount is broke it will jump and is easy to see. Usually if its broke it will rub on the fan shroud when you apply tourque.

sounds easier than my plan. im going to try it tomorrow

just put a board between the oil pan and the jack to distribute the force, and the jack shouldn't hurt anything

Depends.... I've seen some pretty thin oil pans from rust. I would try a board on edge to where the oil pan bolts on. Then use a jack under that.

When mine was bad I noticed it when I was starting off on a hill in 4wd low, and it looked as if the shifters were going to fall out of the truck.

e brake
4lo

gas it
you can see it from the cab through the bottom of the hood and most likely hear it as well

I pulled up to a 3-4ft rock ledge in Tellico on trail school bus...I declutch to try to crawl it and my motor mount and tranny mount broke, twisted the trottle linakge and my truck took off full throttle up the ledge and the next one after it.

Talk about a wake up call...
