Yes. With 2 points.
1. I think the boulder switch back could be done in reverse. We may not need to try to turn around it. Maybe...
2. The clutch worry could be dealt with by using the parking brake too. The 40's and 60's will work great with this. It's what we did taking off from a start on a steep hill in SF. Not sure how the electronic stuff works on the newer vehicles.

Also, make sure your parking brake is in good shape...you'll need it on this trail!

Actually you might be right on reversing the boulder for shorter vehicles, but if my memory is correct after unsuccessfully trying a forward approach we switched to reverse and I ended up in an Austin Powers scenario

I finally ended up making it around going forward. Again Wheelbase & Vehicle length is key on this trail.

Someone is going to have to explain to me how the clutch start thing works. i understand it in theory, but never seen it used in practice.

Clutch start cancel allows you to start the vehicle without the clutch pedal depressed to the floor. Awesome for warming up the vehicle during the winter without climbing in, but also very helpful on the trail to start without any rollback. While in 4lo and first gear you simply engage the clutch start cancel and turn the key, first gear will keep you in position without using the brakes, you'll start and immediately begin moving forward at a slow pace and then can add gas as needed. Couple points to consider, 1. First gear should keep you from rolling back but I'd give it a quick test and be ready to reapply the brake. 2. On very steep terrain if you're running over-sized tires and have a lot of extra weight this might not work, the engine will try and turn over but you'll stall before you get going. Not a big deal though, since you're still in gear you won't risk rollback. I'm hoping lower gears will help with this.

Well, we are getting a fantastic response for this trail ride. Unfortunately, we have to cap this trai ride at 10 trucks. This is almost pushing it. There will be other users coming down as well, so we need to make sure we are not causing too much delay. My count right now is:

Me
bagochips76
Nohermosa
elkun1
ttFJC
Secretasiansam
Made It
Rob B

That's 8 trucks, so 2 more spots are open. Who else wants in?

Count me in, and rob too with his green truggy. I want to be in the slower group, especially if that is friday night. TC you mentioned a 3 hour commute; my computer tells me its 150 miles away so that's 50 mph, which is perfect for me, unless I'm wrong in how far it is and I should leave even earlier?
Google maps puts it at 185 miles. Here is a link.

I'm heading down to the trailhead Saturday morning from Billings. I will do my best to be there by 9am. I have to work late the night before so I'll do my best. I have a winch, snatchblock, cb and roast beef.;)

arg, another major oil leak on the 40. unless i can figure this one out and fix it or get another engine in I'm gonna be on plan b and take the 84 pu. should have a winch and acces, cb and maybe a 2 meter. What simplex channel is gonna be used so i can program it in?

Well, the mini will do great too, but I hope to see that sweet 40! It always makes club photos better. Nohermosa of Made It will need to chime in on the vortex of the simplex and the flux capacitor. I don't know about any of that!

It will be my wife our two dogs. We will be comming through Yellowstone and out the west exit near Cody. I have to look at a map to figure travel time but think we will be looking at 3 hours or so. I think we are leaning towards a early Sat drive out to you.

Question for you. Where will we be camping sat night? Also when are you planning the go up the swich backs, Sunday morning?

The switch backs occur shortly after the beginning of the trail. Maybe 1.5 hours? We will camp out after the switch backs. Sunday will be a bit more climbing, beautiful vistas from The Top of the World, and some fun technical spots. Ending with a sweet trip on the Beartooth Highway to Red Lodge.

Sounds great! You mentioned recovery gear. I will without operational winch this go round. I rebuilt my m12000. It is working but I did not install the cable. I am waiting for synthetic line. So no working winch at this time.

It appears the front cover is the culprit, not gonna get fixed before the weekend so plan b it is. now to figure out how to figure out if it's the cb or the antenna thats bad. filled up the windshield washer so it's almost ready

Does the front cover just involve the harmonic balancer and crank bolt? Is that the hard part of it?

Bummer. But the mini is awesome!
almost forgot, tc do you think 31's will work or should i put on 33's?
You could probably make it on 31's, but I think it would be worth it to put on the 33's

Sounds like my responsibility to fix that oil leak. That shouldn't have happened. Lets talk about it this weekend Ron and get that taken care of ASAP. Wish I had time to do it before this weekend.

No worries. Bring whatever you have. I doubt we will need anything, but if we do on the switch backs, it will be...interesting to say the least. The more we have to improvise with, the better.

So i am in 100% now.
recovery gear: hi lift, tow straps, and shovel and CB
I will not be able to make the friday night meet up so i will be leaving Sat Am early. Who/where is the saturday meet up or should i just plan on meeting at the trailhead?

I think you will be the only Saturday person leaving from Bozeman. Two others will be coming out early as well, but from other locations.

The last gas you'll be able to get is in the town of Bridger, on 310. Be sure to fill up there. Google maps also says to turn on 292 at the Edelweiss Haus. I saw nothing indicating 292. But you will turn right at the Edelweiss Haus. This is your final approach into the canyon we will be in. The road takes a sharp right not too long after, and you'll want to stay straight. Go towards the amazing looking canyon. The river is right there. Only a few miles and you'll hit the end of the pavement, our campsite, and the trailhead.
